Breeding information about Banggai Cardinals

Marcel it was in this tank. Sorry i cannot give you details on the group behaviour as i am only at the client for about 2.5 hours every second week. From what i see is that there is a pair swimming close together and the others are roaming. We obviously upset the whole works when we come with our water change and maintenance regime. I did not have a camera with me when this happened but this pic is similar to what happened with the urchin spawning/ pooing. Will upload later if i can find.

The top of the tank should be covered with card board. In the cardboard you have to cut a round hole, roughly 100 to 150 mm in diameter (depending on the size of your rearing tank).

It is very important, that the light shines only from the top into the rearing tank and
no light shines from the above onto the sides of the rearing tank.

Why?

The food (enriched brine shrimp) is attracted to the light and will stay in the centre
from the rearing tank. In the light you can easily see, if you have to add more food or not.

Marcel, a question about the tank for the fry.

You recommend keeping the tank covered on top and all the sides, with a hole on top for a bit of light to come through.

At what stage (age of the fish) do you recommend removing the covers so that the entire tank is lit up again?

The safest would be until they weaned. Around at the age of six weeks.
Raising them in a bucket would be the best, as there are no reflections from the sides.
If the bucket is 300mm in diameter, the hole in the lid should be 200 mm.

On saturday I saw some strange behaviour from my Cardinals. The one pulled up to the other and started shaking or "vibrating". I take it they are mating since the male now has a bloated mouth again and isn't eating.

I took a small video clip with the camera that i'll try and post.

Yep, as soon she is swimming next to the male and starts "vibrating", she will spawn soon.
When she is finished with her "vibrations", she swims underneath the male to the other side and starts "vibrating" again.
 
I noticed, the yellow belly and the domino thread have been voted with excellent.
I found out, only one vote is needed to get excellent.
I thought, my banggai thread is also excellent, so I voted. What a stupid system, you can vote your own thread. Maybe I also can give myself a "Thanks". :)

oki, i ordered myself 10 banggai's which i get next week, what ratio of males to females do i want, they will be the only tank inhabitants
 
It depends on how many tanks you have and how they can be separated. One female can be used with as many males as you wish, if you can set up a compartmentalised system to separate the males. Marcel recommended three males to one female if I remember correctly and I have also seen that elsewhere in papers on breeding Banggais. Otherwise one female to one male if you have more than five tanks, but then you need to stop them breeding periodically to allow the male to build up his strength. You will also need tanks to raise the babies.

The way I understand your question is, you want to put one females and 3,4 or more males together. That does not work at all as the males will kill each other.
I tried that in my long term experiment and I only got females left.
Either you pair them up or you build the banggai breeder.
In that case you will need 3 to 4 males per female.
 
Funny you should revive this post. I just got 10 banggai cardinals today. At what size would you say they are sexually mature. I'm going to be building your banggai breeder next week some time, will post full build pics.

At the age of 4 to 5 months and 3 to 3.5cm in length.;)
 
Alright these ones are around 3cm's. I'm keeping them all together for tonight (Hope they will all be fine). Tomorrow I'll whip out the magnifying glass and try and sex them all. I just hope I got lots of males and two females.

Good stuff Manic, I seriously doubt if you will be able to sex them at that age though...but it does help feeding them a lot before trying so the bellies are full

Yes, I could, but I don't think I will have the time to do it. It is much more complex than breeding banggais.
