Rob's tank and greenhouse

Rob you really are a trooper and have amazing tenacity. Did you lose your Berghia (I sincerely hope not) Glad to hear you are getting on top of everything and things are coming right.

Rob well worked through. Hope you get to the stronger end of it.

I have not read through your entire thread so please forgive and do not take what i ask up in the wrong way. What happens to the waste water when you do water changes on your systems? Do you have a recycle or waste water disposable system, or is it disposed down the municipal waste system.
As you know we are setting up a QT effort and the waste water rework/purification/disposal is a cost and environmental necessity. Please share you thoughts with us.

Did you lose your Berghia

Yup. The snails were climbing out of the tank and dying. That was when I finally twigged it was dinos.

What happens to the waste water when you do water changes on your systems?

I pump it into my trailer and take it to the sewage works. We're on a septic tank system here. It's on my way to the beach anyway, so it's not as big a deal as it could be.

As you know we are setting up a QT effort and the waste water rework/purification/disposal is a cost and environmental necessity.

Sorry, for clarity, you're setting up a quarantine facility and you want to minimize waste water and make sure you're not pumping nasty stuff into the environment?

Yes Rob, i was just wandering if you were retreating the water for reuse and how you were going about it.
Minimising the waste and protecting the environment is one very important thing. The reduction in salt costs are also a concern and of importance to us. The two go hand in hand.

I normally reuse water for algae and other cultures. I chlorinate/dechlorinate it first. After culturing rotifers or Artemia I just chuck it. Otherwise when I syphon out the detritus I lose a lot of water which goes to waste, but that's fine. Part and parcel of the process, I guess.

Frank Hoff used to reuse water from his clownfish hatchery by letting it "lie fallow" in pools until the nitrates were consumed. He could reuse the water once in this way. Maybe that's an option for you?

I'd be careful, though. In a QT setup you typically have medication and pathogens in your waste water. Reusing it will be a little risky. You could use a lot of carbon and UV, maybe? Not sure it would wind up much cheaper in the long run.

Alternatively you could run at a reduced salinity. This can help reduce salt consumption, and it also has other benefits (and some small risks).

Just arrived back in SA this morning. Everything looks healthy and happy. I'm going to put in the flow propellers next, so updates soon.

Glad all is good Rob, those monti frags i got from you are doing well in the main tank colouring up nicely especially the orange one, they only went in about 1 week ago as i Quarantine all corals as well.

Cant wait to see the props in action!
