Rob's tank and greenhouse

Very nice build man.
Hope to see some fish and coral soon man.

Good luck:thumbup:

Quickie update:

Tank (the glass is much cleaner now. Finally got a new scraper and got into the tank):

Testing my new wavemakers:

Lots of cavitation at high RPMs. They'll be deeper than this in the tank, so hopefully it won't be so severe:

My variable speed control gear. This generates the three phase power needed by the motors. Really nice bits of kit:

I'm getting the proper shafts for the motors in the next couple of days. I then need to sheath them in PVC, mount them, finish the strainers etc.

After all of that, though, I'll finally be able to keep coral in my tank. Yay!

Wow!!! Seeing fish in this monster puts the scale into perspective. I really admire your perseverance through all of the obstacles that you've encountered Rob. It must be hard to stay motivated sometimes. I think that if it wasn't smack bang in the middle of your living area, you probably be forging ahead a lot slower.

Those wave makers look like they'll definitely do the job. How many of them are you installing?

This will be awesome when its fully stocked!!

All the best for the future.

those are going to make great martini makers

Insightful comment ;)

On the wave maker, I suggest some fixed vertical plate baffles to prevent it creating a vortex

Nice idea. I'll see if it's necessary when the prop is deeper and encased in a strainer.

what shape are the props, got a pic?
what type of flow are you looking at getting with those?

They're two bladed Jarvis Marine Watersnake polycarbonate props. No pic handy.

They deliver about 15kg of thrust at full speed of 1400RPM. This is the same (in rough physics terms) as dropping 15kg from a height of one meter into the tank every second. I'm going to pulse them so I'll get harmonic waves.

thanks, yip i understand the physics :)

was just worried, from the pics, that the flow might be to conical, but i am sure your grate/covering will vary the flow

I might have mentioned this before........ seems like someone paid attention...... BUT
I'll say it again:

THERE

IS

NO

SUCH

THING

AS

TOO MUCH FLOW!!!!

Been a while Rob.... Nice build..... What am I saying....

Awesome.....

tanks looking great rob, and lovely inovation with those props, it will be great to see this tank with coals in it too. well done on staying the course, its must have been tough at times

Did SIMS ever get those fish that I caught for you down to CPT?

Unfortunately not. I swore at him repeatedly and insulted his ancestry, but no joy.

Mmm. Still is. Just spent a sweaty morning putting in and automating fans in the greenhouse. Next up, replace the rotten bits of the door and add a fly screen vent. Fun fun fun.
