ok, just saw your post of length of time. I say bacterial/yeast competition.
Also, Will, do you want no NO3, PO4 I understand, but NO3 at your level is great. What are striving for bud?

Hi Carlos

I am looking to colour my corals up. Po4 sitting now at 0.02 (Added new GFO). I had my No3 sitting at 0.00/untraceable with pellets and had some nice coloration.
Just want the same results from cubes as I don't want to upgrade to a bigger pellet reactor!

What happened with Orca phosphaguard ?:eek: Best stuff ever?
 
There is a new product coming from Orca that will replace the phosgauard.

Understand your frustration.

Colours are dependent on nutrient availability.
Pellets and cubes will compete for nutrients, leaving excess carbon in the system which will in turn allow your zooanthellae to absorb food more readily and therefore go brown.

Remember that zooanthellae release colours in lack of nutrients so that the coral DNA is protected from excess light (I know you have vertex lights).

Remove the pellets, or keep the pellets.

Unfortunately, things happen slowly in marines.

Hi Carlos

So what you are saying is take the pellets out, leave the cubes and see what happens ?
I do not understand the excess carbon causing brown outs of coral, could you elaborate? My understanding was always just no3 and po4 was responsible for colouring issues.
 
there are plenty params for colours, if you look at the thread i started with the no water change tank, actually adds nitrates and phos to his SPS reef.

i ran my old tank at 10-15ppm NO3 and 0.64 PO4 and my clams and corals were awesome and grew great.

@williet, Oh bother. I gonna need a biology recap here. In simple terms, too much food in terms of simple sugars (C) will cause zooanthellae (algae) to have food readily available.

Hay, @butcherman on Sunday when we checked the sump, it was clear. Tonight there is the same anaerobic layer in the sump. 3 days later.

Pop past tomorrow if you want. @KillerWhale you might also be interested.

Unfortunatly its month end and our company is being handed over to a new boss. Its going to be a very long day.

This does look very intreguing though i wonder what is causeing it? maybe a reaction with your denitrator effluent? (wild stab in the dark)

Just as well you can't make it today. You would have thought i was telling porky pies. This is what the sump looked like a few moments ago. Really baffling.

maybe the soap powder u 'accidentally' dropped in there has been removed by u're skimmer...?

Yes the cubes are not the same color as when new. I would not say they are black. Not like anaerobic black like you get in dead spots of a DSb's. They are more of a brown color which I thought was algae. Might be wrong and maybe it is not.....

Thanks the reason for asking is because mine is also black
 
Well I am not going to post another PIC of the same anaerobic layer. But yesterday it was clear, tonight not. only thing that changed was a top up of RO to the sump. Will check in the morning.
