Orca nitra guard bio cubes discussion

I have pics under my thread not sure if you can see the GHA properly I will try take clearer ones and post them there.
I must get those test kits and also a TDS meter to test my RO water as I make my own.
@CJT thank, in order to solve the problem we need to eliminate the obvious causes, from there we can go further...
unless we solve the cause, i can recomend a million solutions that will cost $$ and still get GHA

By the look of those pics any numbers would skewed by the up take of the GHA. Check your RO TDS. I think a scrub is in order. Also what about that sand bed, vacuum it lately? Do you have a CUC?

What herbivores do you have in your tank, how many? Algae grows, your water might have perfect parameters but the stuff will grow and can grow in areas that are nutrient poor. Plants were around way before any vertebrate animal, and are very adept at extracting nutrients from areas we think they cannot, for example, your rocks.

i agree with the above, looks like alot of nutrients tied up in the rock and gravel...
looks like work for a sea-hare... i might have one to load for a month or 2

is the gravel cleaned? if you disturb it is there a lot of detritus?

Moo7 I do not really mess up the sand as I thought it was bad to do so and I scrub some of the rocks but often as I am scared the GHA spreads I need to get a TDS meter

DallasG I dont really disturbe the gravel but on the few rocks I have scrubbed alot of crap comes off but I keep changing the direction of the flow pumps but that doesnt seem to help much

I didn't mean to stir it, better to vacuum out accumulated detritus.

Carlos the only fish I have that eatd algea is the Poeder Blue

Ok, any other animals l like Mexican turbo snails, trochus snails, urchins. I have some trochus snails that I would gladly donate to you!

You do not have enough herbivores! Get yourself some more herbivores, they do not add any extra bio load to your tank!

6 months have passed since I added a 1L of cubes to my setup and thought I'd revert with some feedback :yeahdude:

After about a month I saw little to no difference and to be honest and I was about to give up on this product. But behold, things started to change rapidly. I battled with GHA on selected places in the tank and nothing I did seemed to help. It's been 6 months since adding the cubes and for roughly 5 I've been totally amazed. I'm a lot less concerned about the amount I feed and add unthawed frozen food to the display without any worries.

I'm going to state it, but this has been the best marine product I've purchased hands down:eek: I know the jury is still out on this product based on some reefers experiences, but I am truly a supporter thereof.

Well done!

@Andreas that's great news! Glad there is another one that is had success with this product. It works, just follow the EASY instructions and away you go. I do believe that its when the users of the product try and do different things that they end up not having the success they like.

Hi Guys, firstly awesome thread. I've read the whole thing. Yes, all 23 pages. I still have a few queries and hope someone can help:
Using the Red sea algae control test kits (Comparator type) and using the hi res tests, my No3 and phosphates are the maximum colours (think its NO3 - 32ppm and PO4 - 3ppm). I have previously tried the Orca PhosphaGuard and seemed to lower the Phosphates, so I put that back in again.
From what I read, the Nitra Guard is great for reducing the NO3, my LFS said I should get the phosphates lower before I use NitraGuard. Is this correct or should I rather be using NitraGuard and only put the phosphaguard in when my Nitrates are much lower?
Also I see that the Nitra guard has carbon in it. Would this mean that that don't need to add additional carbon. I have been using the Seachem Matrix Carbon and it really works in giving crystal clear water, should I take this out?
Last question, in redesiging my sump, I have allowed for a DSB compartment. I haven't done anything with it yet, but if NitraGuard is that good, should I still setup the DSB?
Thanks for all the help!

You can use the Nitra gaurd cubes immedietly. They are of a carbon source that's not the same type of carbon as activated carbon. The carbon found in the cubes are a food source for the yeast cells that remove NO3 and PO4.
You will most likely find that when your PO4 reaches a very low point that you would have to add the Titanium cubes that remove NO3 without the need for PO4
