Let the Build Begin

Actually its the otherway round. 50mm pipes are essential! and a Durso off of that works like a charm. I hardly hear anything from mine unless i stand right next to it.

Hmmm, interesting. I thought I had the answer. I suppose a 50mm hole can't hurt. Unless one fishy decides to go for a ride
Won't you post a pic of your overflow on your build so I can have a look. Shot ;)

Ok, here's the next update. Time to test the Tank with FW.
The beginning was very nerve wracking. And then a problem...

Bracing failure, ahhhhhh.... ****

Now that's not so lekker.

i see your tank has an over hang on eighter side, i am wondering if that can add stress

That's why I've put the sheet of 16mm Lam Pine beneath. But the crack came halfway down the bracing on the 1500 length. I'm wondering whether to do a center strip brace to try prevent the glass from deflecting so much it splits the bracing again.

I've been look at what sort of lighting to go with and I really like a halide but you can have only that if you wish to run a variable stage lighting to simulate sunrise and sunset so I reckon T5's on timers is a better option. Both is first prize but costly. This is the lighting hood I've come up with.

I'll use Nutek Fibre Cement Board for the housing. That will be painted a colour to suit. I'm thinking black to match the black silicone. I'm just not certain how many t5's?
Got 6 Planned for the moment.

Check it...

Would work - BUT, what are you going to use for reflectors?

Generally, T5's are great, but they do outprise MH's on the long run - I've done this exercise.;) You do however have greater control over color as you said yes. So just take that into consideration.

If you are happy with that, then go with T5's

Ah, yeah forgot the reflector, I'll definitely have some alanod aluminium in there. Maybe a
2 x 70w MH and 2 Blue T5's. What sort of lighting are you running?

Alright, after much farting around I've decided its time to get my overflow sorted and sump in place. I have narrowed down two options for my overflow and need some feed back.

External Overflow Box with Durso

Internal Overflow Direct To Sump

Just a few questions, I like the first option but how do I skim the top layer of the water with holes. Do I need to build an internal box like option 2 to skim surface water?
Will it be ok to simply remove mid layer water and not the surface water?

Let me try explain.

Make the side glass approximately 1cm below the expected water level. Build the outside overflow the full width of the side and same height as the other 3 sides.

Believe me the holes won't work.

Pat looks good but rather create a durso with a 90 degree pipe facing down. Without out that your going to have a MONSTER Gurgling sound and its not pretty. The skimming of the surface happens when the water flows over the overflow into the chamber. Youve seen how mine was done and it works like a charm!

Lighting Pendant almost complete as well. Just finishing up with the MH reflectors and it needs some tempered glass and another coat of paint and we'll see how she runs. More pics 2mo.

Light Pendant looks VERY cool! How far from the water is it going to be? What are you doing about cooling?

Also why not do it at the back of the tank? Doesnt look that nice having pipes coming out the side. Also doesnt allow for a full view. Depending on how you placing your tank.

Putting on the side coz I'll eventually have the tank as a divider so I can view through the longer sides. Pendant will be between 300 and 600 from the water surface. I've welded up a hanger with winch to raise and lower it as necessary.
