The Zeovit Thread - SA Style

Absolutely, nothing wrong with variey. Google Ivan lasser tank, he was using zeo with some prodibio suppliments

So i am going to bite this bullet this weekend,

My only questions

What if you want to go on holiday?
Can you reuse the zeolith stones? (dry them out clean them and use them)

i will be doing this on my cube which will be SPS dominant

In short, NO. Please read up on what a zeolite is and how it functions. Also, get the zeo guide to answer your holiday question.

In South Africa, hundreds play with fire each and every day. How long would you leave a fire unattended? If the correct protective measures are in place and have been keeping the fire in check for some time, I suppose you could leave it unattended for a while, BUT, what if something goes wrong........ Enjoy your holiday, knowing that you have taught somebody how to look after your tank, Somebody that you trust to braai on your fire...

Seriously fantastic analogy ;)

So many factors involved in this wonderful hobby

@dallasg.. I'm very keen on the zeovit route for my soon to be sps dominant tank... But would you rate I can go zeovit on my broodstock tanks.. Grow out tanks and baby rearing tanks? ( Seahorses and clowns) would the zeovit harm the babys in any way or would the berlin method be better?

Hi Quinton

you have my number you are more than welcome to call me regarding anything Zeo.:)

To answer you first question

If you go away no stress, the system will easily run a week or so without any reactor pumping or dosing, just resume on your return.

Regarding your other question, zeovit media it is not reusable.

some good Q's here, i am plan to summerise today, time permitting

I personally just don't really understand why Zeovit is any better than any other porous rock filter substrate. I understand their theory about their bacteria and all that, I'm just not convinced that you can (practically speaking) have that much control over which specific strains of bacteria grow in whatever filter you have. And how would you even know if you did?

I think Zeolite rock is probably a good filter media. I actually have it in one of my Magnum canister filters right now. I'm just not exactly sure how Zeovit is better in any way that's above and beyond that of any other Zeolite filter media. I'm NOT saying that I know for sure it's not... I'm just saying I've been yet to be convinced that it is. As always though, I maintain an open mind.

From what I have read and understand the Zeolites are a little more than just a medium for bacteria to thrive on, they are extremely porous and this forms and extremely important part of the process.

What makes Zeolites different to other porous media is their ability to absorb specific compounds. With a product like ZeoVit there are multiple different zeolites to absorb different chemicials. Now seeing as most zeolites in aquariums absorb amonnium and are extremely porous this makes an ideal enviroment for bacteria to grow and thrive, pefect place to live with food right on the doorstep of the bacteria.

I found this article on wetwebmedia a very good read and explanation of zeolites in general

they use the zeolites for bacteria growth and ionic removal of certain elements and minerals, namely potassium, thats why they recommend not using live sand and other sources as the mixture of "their" propriety blend of bacteria when combined form new strains to biologically remove Nitrates & Phosphats

but thats the secret they gaurd

what if you start using zeo on an already running tank? Surely thats the same as using live sand?

yip, but they have a different 14d cycle to wean your system on to the zeovite route.

also one of the reasons you cant or shouldnt use ozone and UV is that the bacteria is also water-bourne

Hey dude.. In connection with the zeo running the breeding and larval sytems... Which in the end would bring out the best results...? Example which would produce better filtration results which in turn would increase the level of fry making it to meta?
Zeovit does nothing for fish :)

Could I also feed heavily and not worry about a spike in nutrients?
if your skimmer is big enough

And just a q on the zeo? If one runs a sps system on zeo.. Would u still need to dose cal and alk and all that? Does the zeo food and all that only feed the bacteria?
yip you would need to suppliment the Ca, Mg and Alk based on consumption

for breeding fish, you can just use skimmer and bio-balls
