Punk's Rimless Reef

 yeah i was also very worried when i saw adriaan's setup, he's been running them without covers for months now without any trouble

he also reckons it's nennie safe because when a nennie gets close it can feel the presence of the propeller and move away or get blown away, it can't be sucked into any cover and make soup

This is very inspirational.
Did you use any specific calculations for that overflow and what about when the power goes off and the siphon effect (I assume there is not to much water in the chamber and your sump just handles it.)

thanks Ross!

yeah it's a normal inside-tank semi-C2C overflow box but it's just way more slimline (10mm thick), when the power goes it only empties the contents of the box and the water in the piping to the sump, we're going to leave enough space in the sump to cater for this

i can't wait to see you build your rimless starfire black silicone masterpiece!

cheers

thanks Jacques, i had to take what i could get, there's no stock of the vortech pumps and these tunze's was the only stock the supplier had... i would kill for another 6101 and 6201... :p

i want to run 2 6101's (2 x 12,000l/h) in the middle over the reef to break the surface a bit and 2 6201's (2 x 20,000l/h) on the sides past the reef to blow all the way to the opposite side of the 2m...

will that be enough flow?

cheers

Should be enough... Vortech's would not work anyways as the for 19mm glass...I also think the Tunze magnets are also up to 19mm...

yeah George said that he'll ask tunze in germany if they have stream magnets that can stick on 24mm glass (they should because they have a cleaning magnet that can stick on 30mm!?)

for now adriaan glued the tunze rails on the glass...

Punk - the flow should be great - what return pump are you planning to use?

This means that the 4 Tunze's would give you a total flow of 64000 litres per hour.... Plus your return pump of course.......

Are you planning to keep SPS? BTW: I think you also said that you going to be using a CLS as well? Am I right? What flow will this pump/s be?

my return and CLS are each an Iwaki MD70, i think they do 6000l each...

the CLS won't run all the time, it'll only come every hour or so to blow the detritus out from under the rocks...

i'd really love to stack this baby full of SPS but i have a lot to learn 1'st :)

Punk, if there is no protection over the blade, aren't you a little worried that you might end up with Sushi? we do a mod over in the UK that is to cut every other bar in the safety cover, this helps to increase the flow without losing the safety cover totally.
thanks Mike! i'll give it a try

i just got myself a 6100, so for now my total flow will be:
1 x Iwaki MD70 return @ ~6000l/h
1 x Iwaki MD70 CLS @ ~6000l/h (under the rocks so doesn't really count)
1 x Tunze 6201 @ ~22000l/h
1 x Tunze 6101 @ ~12000l/h
1 x Tunze 6100 @ ~12000l/h
so total is +/- 50000l/h in a ~1400l tank = 35x

hope this will do for now, ps. am i the only sucker that mixes & matches different tunze's like this!?

Personally I keep a closer eye on flow speed than total turnover. Corals enjoy flow speed's of about 4cm/sec - 40 cm/sec depending on the species (ref Sprung - they did various tests measuring coral growth and waste exp[ulsion at various flow rates). Somewhere around 8cm/sec seems to be a happy medium for a community tank. So put a ruler against the side of your tank and measure how fast a mysis shrimp gets blown along ;-)

Q

How long do you still need to wait before you can put water in your cube. Im dying to see how well the overflow works.

Yeah when you going to run this puppy.

Maybe a bit off topic but any idea how to work out what flow that overflow will take. I have looked at the calculators but have no idea what water head above weir is.

Also interested how much noise it makes.

he even added a moonlight for me! what bulb should i put in???
IMG00274.gif

this baby is huge! i'm thinking of putting in reflectors for the T5's...
IMG00278.gif

it's got slideable glass covers that can be removed easily when changing bulbs, i know some guys say it'll let through less light but i'm scared of the bulbs shattering and landing up in my tank so i'll keep them on for now...

i just got myself 3 x 10K 400W Reeftek MH's, 4 x Coral Blue Actinics (for lots of blue) and 4 x Reeftek Actinics (apparently these are much more purple), i hope it'll look cool, what you guys think?

i'll fire them up as soon as i get home tonight & post some pics...

cheers

sweet dude! those units are awesome! losing a fraction of the light under 400W MHs? not a worry china!! looking nuts! put it on the tank already!!

thanks buddy, i wish i could clone adriaan :)

how's your monster tank coming along? will you be able to get hold of those awesome fish on your list?

:peroni:
