Depends on what corals you want to keep...

One thing I don't really like about kalk is that if your evaporation rate vary a lot you will struggle to hit stable parameters

Unless you use kalk and 2part together where kalk provides bulk of the requirements and you use 2part to hit your target parameters

But if you only going to keep a some softies, lps then both options will work
 
Hi Guys

Update, Managed to buy the float switches and pump for the ATO. Will get a relay this week and start building the thing.

Also got myself a elcheapo dremmel to cut the slits in the overflow box.

Bought a 30 Amp power supply and hooked up the rest of the LED channels.

Went and got a new clown this weekend. I noticed it struggling a lot to swim in the amount of flow in the tank. I pointed the AC wave maker upwards and tuned the RW 8 down to the second speed on the controller. This morning the clown was dead. This hobby can really annoy the living life out of me some times. But yea life goes on.

Next step will be to order the relay and perspex for the ATO and also perspex for the overflow box. Hopefully by the end of the month I will also order another RW8 and get rid of the AC Pumps.

Sad Update

Last weekend I bought a Occelaris clown, Acclimated for 40min and added it to the tank discarding the water it came in. I saw the flow was to strong so I turned it down. Next day clown was dead. Last night I noticed my existing clown is acting weird, breathing fast and chilling at the bottom, also did not eat. But I didnt think to much of it as they do act weird sometimes. This morning I went to work and it looked better. Came home and the clown is also dead.

I quickly removed him and did a small water change, will do another tomorrow. What baffles me is that my sailfin tang and inverts are doing great and, Corals are also opening wide.

I did water tests now

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 15
Salinity: 1,026,

The question is could the clown I added have been infected and thus spreading the disease to the other clown, And is it a matter of time before my sailfing also takes a kick.

The only thing I can think now of is to quarantine all new fish, do not want to lose more fish as this was my second fish ive ever bought and was 3 years old.
 
Keep an eye on your sailfin and other fish. First sign of something wrong, then rather take them all out, do the bucket method with them and thereafter keep them in quarantine for 6 weeks.

WT is the best thing to do.

Sailfin still doin great, eating like a pig. It must have been something that only hits clowns, will try to do some more in depth research about this and maybe ill come up with something. In the mean time Ill set up a quarantine tank.
 
Just an Update.

Sailfin Tang still doing great.

Started with the cabinet. For now I only attached the sides so that I can start getting rid of all the wires and plugs on the floor.

Today I also installed my ATO.

Its running off a 24v power supply with a 24v Relay.

Its always sad to lose something. I have a friend, she went through 6 clowns and gave up on them! My first 2 died and after some time I got 2 juvenile black clowns. They were in quarintine for 11 weeks!!! They got ICh just before the 4 week period and I did Riaan's bucket transfer on them for 8 days transferring them everyday and after that they were kept in quarintine for another 6 weeks.

I kept finding them wedged under the pvc pipe in the morning, everyday thinking they died, but they then wriggle out and swim along normally. This got me into the belief that they dont like high flow at all and because of this I set my RW4's to night mode so that the flow is reduced during night time.

They are still doing fine and actually growing. Clowns dont seem to be the hardy fish they are advertised as....or used to be?

Do you mind giving a break on it, I see you have 2 float switches, also what pump are you using?

Ill try my best as I also am not a pro with electronics. My dad did the wiring for me.

What I can out of it is their are 4 components, Pump, Power supply, Relay and Float switches.

The relay I am using is a 24V relay and requires 24v to be powered, therefore I am using the 24V power supply.

The float switches are wired in series on to the pump which connects to the relay.

I just used an old magnet cleaner and stuck some perspex which I drilled and bent with a lighter to it.

Yes. I am in the process of mounting everything onto the new side cabinet panels I installed, so all should be sorted by the end of the week.
