Is nobody selling decapsulated brine shrimp any more

Hi Guys,

I have been looking around for some decapsulated brine-shrimp eggs without having to make it myself.

A few years ago it was a pretty common product on the market and I still find it listed on overseas sites. Am I looking at the wrong shops, any MASA dealers with stock.

Appreciate some help, based in JHB but if there is a source in one of the other provinces I will pay and courier

Save yourself a ton of money...decapsulate your own. I would never be able to afford to raise seahorses if I had to buy decapsulated brine all the time. It's not difficult to decapsulate. If you need help let me know. Marcel posted a thread on it here too.
 
Thanks Anemone, I have send you a PM. Just amazed at the fact that something that was so readily available has completely disappeared off the market ? Judging by the replies the only option is decapsulating your own eggs.

Hi Sentari,

There are several advantages to decapsulating Brine-shrimp eggs.
1. They hatch quicker
2. The hatch rate is higher
3. The young are a far richer food source as they have not had to fight their way through the egg shell.

As far as the normal hatching goes you can't really go wrong, several methods exists and the reason yo did not have a hatch was probably related more to the temp. and or waiting time or the age of the eggs.

In addition to the above. The bleach in the decapsulation process kills off any hydroids. Hydroids are deadly to seahorse fry and dwarf seahorses.
 
my bad......just checked....all 3 of our suppliers only supply NON decapsulates brine shrimp


apologies......;)


if normal brineshrimp was orderd though....you would have it next day:thumbup:, cause thats how we roll;)

First step. add eggs to dechlorinated water, max of 4g of eggs per 100cc of water. put airstone in and aerated for one hour, so the thick outer covering around the eggs is permeated by water. add equal amount of sodium hypochlorite(normal house hold jik, not sented) aerated for 25 min, washed under running tap until smell is gone, i use a hanky in a net. hatch in 12 to 18 hours and if the fish eats the nuaply if the coral or fish eats the egg it will not block the intestine(no chitine, so it can be digested by fish or corals)
