Hi

Been following the hubby's hobby for a while. I want to take the big step now... starting my own little ocean, but only with mushrooms. Should I keep fish or can I keep mushrroms only?

I got all the old equipment, obviously,(why will the wife get new equipment) but anyway

A display tank 270l,
sump 60l
skimmer (reef octo 500l-p/h)
varius power heads, not sure if I need them
lights(3x 6000k T5, 2x 12 000k actinic T8's)

I know I should get life rock first, I'm not sure how much for this tank if I only want to keep mushrooms, and what should I use for clean up crew?

Hi there, welcome to MASA. Let's start by getting a clearer picture of the current situation.

Is the tank running already? If yes, how long?

Welcome to MASA :)
That is a decent size tank with a good skimmer and lighting. However with the 6500K lighting you might need to add in 1 more 20K t5 due give the tank a more blue color to it. Mushrooms will be a cool coral for starters!
In terms of a clean up crew, Hermit crabs make an excellent CUC.

Hi, welcome to the forum, glad to see you have joined us, or rather, had no choice:lol: but now your here you can beat him rather than join him ;)

Hello

If you onkly going keep mushrooms, Live rock is not essential. Get some biorock at least, so the mushrooms have somewhere to grow.

But beware, when you see the fish in the Local Fish Shop (LFS), you going want them, and this is where Live rock becomes important.

Clean Up Crew (CUC), hermits and snails will do a great job, make sure you get dwarf hermits, the bigger species can cause havoc.

Good luck

Hi All,
Thank you for the reply, the tank is not running yet, will start this week. And then I will let run for a month or so to settle(will that be anough time) Hubby will help with the test of the water etc, as I still need to learn.I do want to get it up and running, but I do not want to buy corals and let them die.

I would like to get Live Rock, not the whole tank, but it is much nicer than the bio rock. Can I use water from an mature tank when I start it up?

Regards

hello Fishwife:)
Welcome to MASA great to have you here and its excelent to hear you already have what you need to kick the tank off:)

thats a lovely sized tank for what you want to do, and it should be fairly easy to see positive results:)

as warr said you can go with bio rock, but you may want something other than mushrooms after a while, so go with good quality LR to start. Its far better than bio rock anyway and worth every hard earned rand you ahve to spend on it! Oh and dont let hubby steal it off you for his tank :)

MASA is a wonderful place to learn and you ahve a sharp curve to go through in the first 2 months while things start to cycle, but ask as many questions as you like and we will do all we can to asssit:)

Welcome to MASA!!
