fish breeders and other urban legends?

The Asfur angel is being captive bred in the east for a years now...

Do you have a link or some informations about it?

Nothing against you, but I still don´t believe it!;)

I also don´t believe they raised the Regal tang. I really would like to know, where you got this info from.

Marcel...there is confusion here again..Regals have been CAPTIVE RAISED...not bred . although AMDA has news on doing them & Asfur's ...not sure as this is only internet info

marcel i know that you are just trying to state that it is a hard long road to try and breed mandarins.

That is not exactly what I want to tell you. It is more to give you an idea, what are you facing. Nothing worse, than a huge excitement and the reality is shocking.
It is good, that you want to do that, but I want to see at the end of the day that you did it. Not because I don´t believe in you, it is more that I am not so sure if I ever will raise them. So it is a good thing if you can do it. But please, if you are going to do it, then do it and don´t give up. That´s what I am doing. My targets and time frames are always difficult to reach, but at least I come close to my targets.

I mean, I bred the first clowns in March last year. I could say I did it, but I wasn´t sure what would happen with the next batch and how the survival will be.
Today, I really can say, clowns (ocellaris) are not a problem and I raise them always at least above 90 % survival. It took me one year to make my technique efficient and I feel very comfortable with every new batch. But with the damsels, I feel like I felt that time back, when I caught my first clownfish larvae. So I know excatly what you have to go through.

That is exactly my point, Frans! Even the dwarf angels (Frank Baensch´s achievement) were CB, but raised with wildplankton.

thanks i appreciate this perspective

i agree , boy are they stunning! i saw a mandarin for the first time aboutfive years ago and that was it, i taught him to eat brine shrimp and moved him onto frozen mysis as well as the copepods in my nano(which lasted for the first month and for the next ten months he ate frozen. i only found out later that mandarins are jumpers. but i still really love mandarins. a tank with a decent coral setup and a pair of mandarins is the pinnacle of my fishy focus and if i can help some breed and document it wow! ps i am not into breeding for intentional resale. i am here to enjoy the trip!
100% with you on that one as it's the same for me. I wish you all the best Glen:thumbup: :slayer:you can do it:slayer: you can do it:slayer:

thanks! its gonna be interesting, still gotta get microscope, finish my tank with eggcatcher and put in the lights with controlled sunrise and sunset. finish the water regulator on my kreisel, and find mandarins i am happy with to wean onto brine shrimp and pellets and in between start and maintain my cultures lol!

Glen I remember a few years back when I got my first green spotted mandarin the first thing that cam to mind was trying to breed them & still keen on trying it & even with other fish & invert species as well. But I never went ahead with it as I knew very little on these guys & did not want to make a mistake trying so I put that on hold for now. I am still going ahead with the ponies though & just need confirmation for the pipefish & can't wait for that. I hope you will be successful breeding mandarins & take my hat off to you for trying:thumbup: GOOD LUCK

you are welcome to join me in the escapade! two heads are better than one mistaorange!

I know of someone localy who has claimed to have managed two rear only a few mandarins but after many failed attempts it seems just as hard as damsels

Trevor, I think you are right. It is up to Glen to start riding a heavy motorbike, before even trying to ride a bycycle. With raising my clowns first, I will have a chance to raise the damsels. I reckon, without having raised clowns, it would take double the time to raise damsels.

Mandarin larvae are actually very hardy larvae, compare to damsels. Once you get them to eat, you will succeed.

these fish are being exported by my suppliers that took many years to find, if you want to know more you're welcome to pm me.

the regal tangs are available weekly from small to large size, not just info or "urban legend", as well as the asfur and maculosus angels. clowns are not the only captive bred marine fish commercially available...

you are right 2 heads are better than 1 as long as they don't bump it's all good.

lol you are right, warning tho i prefer dealing with facts, i hate it when someone wishy washies, it drives me bonkers( facts include saying 'i am doing this or that and i am trying to achieve this, or i tried this but that happened instead. or this is what i have achieved tho i have tried this or that)

Yes Glen I have to agree with you there & as some would say seeing is believing! Hey do you know much about scooter dragonets? I have 2 in my DT & don't know if I have 2 male or females or a pair but these 2 seem to change colour on a regular basis but their shades are identical would you know why? I have another 1 in the other tank & have been tempted to add it to the DT with the other 2 as the pair of tomatoe clowns keep chasing & nipping it. Do you think the 3 would be ok?

if they are not fighting, more than likely you have a pair. i however do not know their specific sex markings cos i have no exp with them. if you put all three together and it is one male two females you are fine, if more than one male territory issues may become apparent(conjecture cos i dont know the species)

Michael, you got females only.
Google synchiropus ocellatus. Look pictures only. You will clearly see the difference in the dorsal fin, same like splendidus.
