Stumbled across this, very interesting but I'm not totally sold, sharing and wondering what you think ?

The Original EcoSphere® is the world’s first totally enclosed ecosystem - a complete, self-contained and self-sustaining miniature world encased in glass. Be wary of inferior and lower quality imitations. Easy to care for, an EcoSphere is an incredible learning tool that can provide powerful insights about life on our own planet... and provide a glimpse of technology that's shaping the future of space exploration.
But an Ecosphere is much more than a scientific breakthrough - it is a work of art. A living treasure to own or give to someone special. Each EcoSphere is carefully crafted to achieve an aesthetic, meditative beauty that can soothe any environment, including home, classroom or office. Our ecosystems demonstrate in a most simplistic way the interdependence of animal and plant life with Earth’s most precious element - water. Our products have been called science projects, the world's lowest maintenance pets, closed aquariums. They are in fact developments of space age technology initiated by NASA.
Our primary goal is education. We feel fortunate that we can expose all ages to an ecosystem that is decorative, entertaining, and educational. We are proud that our products are on exhibit world wide. Our customer client base transcends age, race, educational levels and geographic location.
Be wary of inferior and lower quality imitations. After 25 years in business, Ecosphere Associates are proud to still be offering the same great products for scientific minded individuals, learning institutions, animal lovers and of course shoppers looking for that unique gift for someone special.

The Inside Story

Inside each EcoSphere are active micro-organisms, small shrimp, algae and bacteria, each existing in filtered sea water. Because the EcoSphere is a self-sustaining ecosystem, you never have to feed the life within. Simply provide your EcoSphere with a source of indirect natural or artificial light and enjoy this aesthetic blend of art and science, beauty and balance.
Because the living organisms within the EcoSphere utilize their resources without overpopulating or contaminating their environment, the EcoSphere requires virtually no maintenance.
EcoSpheres have an average life expectancy of two years. However, it is not uncommon for shrimp populations to be thriving in systems as old as 7 years. EcoSpheres are available in either pod or spherical shapes, in a range of sizes. EcoSphere Associates can also custom design and install larger ecosystems for home and business use. Please see our Exhibition EcoSphere website.

A Glimpse Into the Future

The EcoSphere is the result of technology developed by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. NASA was researching self-contained communities for space explorers to live in during long-term space flights. Out of this research came the EcoSphere - an ecosystem of animal and plant life in perfect balance.

is a magnet cleaner included?

interesting

Problem with these is that there is always external influences, light and temperature being the biggest influences, then you would get my niece that would pick the sphere and shake it about. Guaranteed these are not assembled in environments that are not free of undesirable micro organisms or toxins for that matter.
Sorry I am a sceptic, but they are very cute.

I have seen one of these about 2 years ago at a friends home. He had a "heated stand" for the ecosphere to keep the temperature constant, & had a normal energy saver bulb pointed at the sphere to keep the algae growing inside. He still has it & still going strong.
@RiaanP, yes, they do come with a magnet cleaner inside & you can simply use another magnet or a coin to move the magnet cleaner around with.

looks interesting - but how do you DIY a heated stand or does it come with - optional extra?

Lol, no, he's one of those guys that cant even take a pen apart, let alone build a heated stand. He got the ecosphere & stand as a gift from one of his product suppliers.

No just something I stumbled across, and thought worth a share :)
Lol, thanks andre, yes, they are indeed very interesting & advanced biotopes indeed. Wont mind getting one myself!
