Brett's minimalist shallow reef

Nice work bud. Can you take a close-up pic of one of the corners. Want to see how close you masked the edges off. Have you got rock yet? Seeing how shallow your tank is, you are going to cry when you see my 'hopeful' setup :tt2:

Thanks! Will take one when I get home from work. Does that mean you staring up again??

Looking great so far.....gud luck with the rest of the build

Thanks Triven.

Looking good did you just join the corners of the tank or did you seal it aditionaly aswell?

Are you still going to add a "corner finish" with silicone?

I will not be adding a bead of silicone in the corners. It has been proven that it is not required, specially with the depth of my tank. All imported mass produced tanks don't have it. I looks much neater IMO.

Well, it will definitely look a lot better withou the extra silicone. Especially on such a shallow tank!
Im starting to see why you chose the wooden stand, it really does look stunning witg the shallow tank!

Wow awesome  looking good:)

Almost ready to fill up with salt water. Waiting for substrate and live rock.
Anyone in durban got a few small pieces of Aptasia free Live rock I can buy? Dead or alive.

Side panels made from 32mm pine held on with magnets.

Stained and sealed the side panels.

Glad to see another model pilot amongst the marine guys!
What is that? YAK54? Sbach? What size?

I like you sbach342 haa

Hahaha thanks!

Looking very good but are you sure you can remove the skimmer from the sump?

Thanks, yes the skimmer gets in and out easy. The curve 5 has a very small footprint.

Ah I believe I seen some of these particular components lying about before ;) How noisy is it in operation?

Haha, It's very quite. The fan is the loudest part.

Glad to see another model pilot amongst the marine guys!

Do you also fly? It's an Sbach 50cc gasser.

Brett, your diy skills are amazing bud. Cant wait to see tge aquascaping!

Yip, i'm a long time pilot... (About 8 years active flying)
Whereabouts do you fly bud? Whats your nearest club?
You into sloapsoaring? Or just aerobatics?

Ok cool Iv been flying for about 2 years. I fly mostly at Kingsburgh model flying club it's the closest to me. I fly only aerobatics butnI don't fly as often as I would like to.

What do you fly?

Brett! I was thinking... You won't find LR in this town (greater durban area) without Aptasia... Unless you can buy private, I recon soak and re-soak some very good quality dead LR in RO for a while. It'll also ensure those dam xanthid crabs and cracker shrimp don't hitch a ride into your tank. IMHO of course!

You don't want to wake up to gunshots in your bedroom, only to find it's a cracker shrimp chowing your snails!

Ya il do that. Scubaninja has some Dead LR for me. Going to check it out near the end of the week.

Nice work, Brett

How about some pics on that DIY chiller? I would like to see your plans as I am working on a ice-maker thingy as well, but I'm stuck with the flow of water close to the metal. What's your plan, care to share?

Looking really SHWEET dude

I started a thread for my DIY chiller here
So far it I have only tested it in plastic 100l container with fresh water. When my tank is finished and running then I can really start testing it. So what see in the pic above as all I have done so far.

Il be going for a "drop-in" style chiller where you just dunk the evaporator coil into the sump. I got a small titanium coil from a pool heating shop a few years ago so I will be using that. I am also going to try putting heat shrink over soft drawn copper tube which easily bends into a coil. The heat shrink will insulate heat transfer obviously but you can compensate by making the coil slightly bigger to increase contact time. I think doing it this way is a lot more easier than making a hear ex-changer and the only disadvantage is it uses a bit space in your sump. Drop in chiller looks something like this.

the tank is looking stunning bud. cant wait to see it filled up. on the insulating the copper died, I suggest you get some armaflex from an AC guy (the black insulated tubing) its not expensive and they should give you some for free. much safer on the condensate, you don't want condensation from your copper pipes to fall into the sump.
