Upgrade to RSM 250

Yes that is what I am aiming for. What did you do to solve the cleaning or do you actually need those sponges.

I ended up throwing mine out and put in some other filtration media in it's place (carbon, purigen and a third item that i can't recall offhand). I also used to vacuum the back section to lift any debris that may have settled. Most of the other 250 tanks I used to follow overseas also tossed the sponges so it is not really needed from what I saw.

Yes I have also noticed that, I will change over to the following after removing the sponges:
(From left to wright sanding in front of the tank)
  • Filter floss ( in the filter slider to the return pump between Chamber 1& 2)
  • Activated Carbon In chamber 2 on top of some the biological media)
  • Purigen ( need to add not sure if this goes on top of the carbon or below)
  • Ceramic rings below Skimmer Chamber 3
  • Matrix (in chamber 3 to heater side shared with the Tunze 9004 Skimmer)
  • little bit of porous rubble in chamber 4 shared with return pump 2
Can you remember how you stacked yours as I am not sure if the above are 100% correct

So I can't find my pics on my old thread (but it made me very nostalgic, lol). From what I recall, I had stacked the purigen (top), then carbon and bottom was matrix. Middle was the skimmer, I kept the standard Skimmer and it was okay, not the best but it worked for me. On the right was the heater, think it also had a little cut out in the lid for the cord. I don't think I ran any other mechanical filter but if you have space it would not be a bad idea to have it in.

I also had one of the Perspex media racks to help with the media, if you are ever in jhb you are welcome to

I tried uploading a pic of mine but it is not going through for whatever reason…

Sorry the picture cut off you sentence - do you still have the Perspex media rack?

Sorry about that. Yup, I still have it, you can have it if you ever in the area. :)

Thanks a lot for your help and advice, I will definitely take you up on your offer, in which area of JHB are you?
What tank do you currently run?
I got my CPI test back and it shown that my refractormeter was out and the SG was low 1.021 and also caused a few other things related to salt to be low, a good thing was that I still have my glass hydrometer from my tl550 and I have now recalibrated and found the reason for it to be out ( The solution to calibrate was too cold once it Hit 25C it was measuring correctly)
Now I am going in the right direction.

I am in honeydew (Jhb west). Got a Red Sea reefer 900, I do not recommend this tank or reefer series at all because of seal failures. My tank split last year October and from what I have seen on other forums, this is a very common issue.

What salt mix are you using?

Sorry to hear that hope you could fix it and is running again, I am using Aquaforest Reef Salt+ currently.

As we got a kitten I had to close the front lid, which means a new update was needed for the auto feeder. Now The cat cant go fishing.
