Trad's Nano (New)

I wouldnt worry about it too mich...it will die out on its own. Also, the hanna phosphate photometer is uselss...very unreliable things...the phosphorous one is better...look for an article that Cristine Lord (nanotopia) wrote one them... The tank is still new...let it settle...te hair alhae will go away...

."te hair alhae will go away.."at what cost??? you have to do something even if you scrub
the stuff away.

I wouldn't call it useless, the Phosphorous one is more sensitive ppb vs ppm and can give higher readings because of extra sensitivity. But in a marine setup we want less than 0.05 in any case. So if I'm getting nil, and that's the goal, then should be good enough.

Thanks, I'm going to monitor for another week, and measure the Phosphate again on Saturday, it's not out of hand just yet and agree probably cause it's new.

Ok..understand...however he didnt say it was growing out of control over his corals...believe he said certain rocks have spots on them...if it is the case where it is out of control and smothering corals...then yes...common sense kicks in and you try to remove as much as possible. However the tank is 4 weeks old...and i dont think he has anything to worry about yet...

Your live rock might not have cycled well enough and could be a problem, or you might need additional flow in the lower regions of your nano. I also presume your nano went through a full cycle stage before you started adding live stuff. I'm not a great believer of water changes as nothing remains constant and with a small tank like that it could become an issue.

Thanks @George, I'm pretty sure the LR had cycled, it came from a setup that was more than a year old. @Adee 's great SPS setup and he also would get zero phosphate readings.

I've never been able to fix an algae issue by scrubbing it clean. i.e if there's a cause the algae will just grow back.

I did loose a sponge about a week ago during the last stage of the cycle and I think that may have dirtied the water a little. If it's sorted now then the snails etc should sort out the algae growth.... i guessing.

Yes generally sponges are not easy to keep and if they die it's quiet possible to polute the tank with a toxic chemical which might not show up as phosphate.

It was some nice, quite large, yellow sponge which came on the Live rock. Pity it didn't survive (the cycle). But it went all black about 4 days ago. Just before my first water change.

You can kinda see it here, on the bottom left LR, a grey (was bright yellow like the piece at the top) patch on the right side of the rock. It went completed black eventually.

So I got some Purigen to add for filtration, will see how that goes. Algae has just stopped where it was. My tester corals don't look great though, small and closed.

Due a water change this weekend and will test phosphate levels again, I bought some Phosguard just in case it's still high.

5 weeks old and Royal Gramma, Clown, six line, cleaner shrimp, 6 hermits and 6 snails.

Have to say complete turn around tank looking good, even some growth on on Zoas. and another head starting on the Candy Cane I noticed this weekend.

Tank now 6 weeks old, I added a flame angel to the tank, great looking fish!

Phosphate tests also came back zero so something must have spiked it and now looks sorted. Algae slowing dying off.
