Stand smaller than tank ?

Why do you want your stand to be smaller?
Why not make a leadge where the overhang is. Eg weld a piece of square tubing under the overhang.

if you gonna make the stand smaller than the tank have the mop ready, the weight of your vertical panes of glass are all on the edges unless the have one hell of a base i would not advise it.
What you could do is have your counter top extend over the stand and let your tank rest on that, but use a decent thickness top and try and brace it somehow, timber under its own weight will eventually sag leaving a gap between the base, styro and counter top.

Frans I wouldn't take the chance. Think in archetectural terms. I would imagine that those edges are load bearing so I would create a plate that is tank size, as a base, or extend the stand below the tank sides with tubing as Evo has suggested...

You can make the legs smaller as long as you have the metal frame supporting the glass the same size as the tank. Just make sure you use a thick walled tube/channel.
