I find the sump thing confusing sometimes as well, for the guys in CT next time you are at Aqua h2O check out their marine sumps, they could not pack any more coral chips and ceramic tubes/rings in their sumps if they tried.. massive amounts of it.
I don't want to knock the methodologies of the wize but this seems to be for almost every LFS.. Sams, check out the sump on his big tank at the back, Northern Aquatics use bio balls, the list goes on.. why does every LFS ( which by the way is where we buy our livestock from ) have all these if they are not necessary.

It's got something to do with rapid removal of nitrates or something.
The LFS get shipments in excess of 100 fish, they need a quick and efficient way of dealing with this massive instant bio load. I think this is where this form of short term filtration comes in as a helpful means of dealing with these sudden massive bio load increases.

No not pumice stone. Man made. Go to most shops they should stock it.

I thought bio rock was ceramic. Pumice stone is also cintered glass
This is what it looks like, please dont confuse it with the similar looking stuff that comes with those curved glass tanks.

It appears this media obviously has it's benefits and drawbacks, the main drawback is with it collecting detritus and having to be cleaned or siphoned out quite regularly.
Now if you were to place this media in the sump or wherever BUT not loose, keep it in the bags it comes in, this will allow you to remove the bag and entire contents in order to clean it out. However, if you were to do this and rinse the bag in a bucket of old salt water and then return it to the sump, would you be killing anything off?

Havent cleaned it for years, dont think its necessary. If one feels the need to rinse any medium it should always be done in water removed from the tank, as its at the same temp and density.

Ok after all the discussion about nitrate, I broke down and did a nitrate test on my water. This is from a tank running for about five years with the same live rock and the same mix of sintered glass and crushed coral in the sump. The reading using a Nutrifin test kit? Less than 5 mg per litre.
I have no prefiltration such as filter wool or sponge. This is the tank I have just added the TS-2 to. I havnt done any tests on the tank in all the time I have had it.
