RSM 250 - And it starts!

Nothing to report so far. ill do a new set of tests when i get home today to see what my levels are doing, very little happening in the tank. Oh how the waiting game is killing me!

great to hear about a new tank:) and the red sea is a very good tank:)

i know its been said that the tank is too small for the tangs you have listed but so often people dont do the research into what is required to keep the fish they want or like. There are a number of tangs in very small tanks with people thinking that because the fish is small its fine to confine it to a gold fish bowl. Thankfully you havenjt done that. I did a simple google and took the first page (people so often believe what is printed and not said) i found on hippo tangs...Blue Tang - Paracanthurus hepatus

so plan your stocking carefully and it will save you harming fish and having to buy a second tank to upgrade to the tank you should have if you want those fish to start with :)

nice work with the test kits though, keep watching that cycle and let it complete all the way through, i know how killing that waiting is :)

Day 10 readings and im getting some great red patches alll over my rocks now!

NO2 : 0.5
NO3 : 25
PH : 8.6
Ammonia : 0.25
salt : 1.024
temp : 28 (it was about 35 outside and 5 degrees extra for humidity)

I wonder if anyone has had any experience with using a mechanical nitrate reducer? Reef Octopus have a nice model for 300l tanks which would work perfect on the RSM.

i have no idea what one would cost but if it avoids water changes id definitely think of getting one!

1000l is 4 times what i need. haha! Does this assist with less frequent water changes? how does it work? does it take water from the tank, filter it and then put water back in the tank? do you put media in it? how long does the media last? can i get the small one in s.a?

Not sure exactly how it works. You still need to place bio-balls in it and it has it's own pump that circulates water in it. I think you put it in your sump. The way I understand it is that it creates an oxygen deprived region for anaerobic bacteria to grow and therefor reduce nitrates. You will still have to do water changes to replace trace elements. All it does is reduce nitrates...

I was under the impression that you were doing water changes to reduce your nitrates? haha. oh well.

Some pics of my tank, fully cycled, still no chiller. Waiting for it to arrive mid March now :(

Hi Dizzyg, your tank looks good, but I'm a bit concerned that you have a urchin and a suncoral in a tank that is only 3 weeks old - do you know the requirements for a suncoral? Does the jaw fish sieve the sand? I might be wrong but it looks like a blue cheek goby to me?

Tobes, you may be right, he does sift the sand, I wasnt 100% on what fish he was, after scouring pics on the web that was the closest i could think(this is after having forgotten what the LFS said he was)

The urchin im feeding some Nori to twice a week, there is plenty on the rocks for him to eat at the moment too, I am keeping an eye on him.

The sun coral and yellow cup coral I am target feeding with zooplankton, was amazing to see them open up so brilliantly last night under the moon lights! they should be called moon coral not sun coral, I just used the syringe method last night but i was reading up on a method where you cut off the top of a coke bottle and place the large rim round the coral and then squirt the food in the top end, I think I will give this a try this weekend. Right now since he is still new in the tank and the tank is still new I will feed them every second day but i think in the long run twice weekly will be good enough.

The yellow cup coral seems to like when the lights are on though which contradicts what I have read so I will keep an eye on him for now.

I do research before i purchase and I have been running the tank at my work for over a year so I do have a pretty good idea of what I am doing.

I have been running the tank at my work for over a year .

Confused now :goofy: - you said that the tank is running 3 weeks?

And I quote "My Red Sea Max 250 has just been purchased and is on its way to its new home, my lounge!

I'm so excited I could pee my pants!

Thanks to my LFS (Northlands Pets) for the great deal on the tank!"

This you posted 3 weeks ago, that is why I was concerned as a 3 week old tank does not have enough food to sustain a urchin and a sand sifting goby. The biological bacteria might not be fully active yet that's why I was also concerned about keeping a suncoral as you need to feed it daily which will impact on water quality.
