RSM 250 - And it starts!

Hi Tobes, work tank / home tank. two different tanks.

Ok, so I'm still concerned that you have a sand sifting goby in a 3 week old tank - they sieve the sand for critters and small pods etc and can deplete a small tank very quickly of its population. He will starve to death :(

And your other comments.

1)urchin is eating Nori that i put in, a 2cm x 2cm piece was devoured by him last night.
2)Sand Sifting Goby is eating pellets i drop in and still sifting the sand
3)every second day feeding of sun coral is plenty, he definately ate a lot last night and was open for a good while when the pumps were off so he could feed.
4) realizing that my feeding regime would impact water quality i jumped up my cleaning as follows
4.a)removed ceramic rings
4.b)added Aqua Medic AntiPhos (500ml bag is enough for a 3 month run in 250l)
4.c)added chemi pure elite. 1 bag since i am running antiphos as well, will replace after 3 months
4.d)running 1 bag of Red Sea carbon, will replace after 2 months
4.e)running micro filter and cleaning daily and replacing once a week
4.f)cleaning sponges weekly in RO water
4.g)10% water change weekly
4.h)testing all water perams every second day to ensure everything is running 100%

Thanks for your concern though.

That's good to hear, just making sure you know the requirements of the live stock you keep and the impact of extra feeding.
Please don't see it as me trying to tell you what to do, see it as a good intention from my side in the interest of the live stock :)

Tobes for the amount of money the tank has cost to start, the amount of money stocking it has cost so far and the amount of money i am going to spend in the future I want everything to survive, If i see him not doing well ill immediately pull him and either put him in my brothers tank or my work tank. Luckily he does eat food i put in, ill do a trial run with planting some frozen food in the sand and see if he likes that more but for now if he is eating the pellets I think he will do just fine!

I was also lucky to have a orange spotted diamond goby (they also sieve sand) that ate pellets and brine shrimp - cute little caracters. If he eats he'll be fine, pellets have more nutritional value than frozen food anyway, so you're OK feeding with that ;)

I find all the fish from my LFS tend to eat whatever you put in the tank, We have a large mandarin in my work tank who loves pellets!

Some pics of my sun coral after feeding, he likes 6pm when the sun is down and the moon lights are one

Yellow coral was supposed to be a night coral like the sun, but for some reason he sleeps at night and is awake in the day, also loves the light and pellet food!

Looks very nice Dizzyg, I like those urchins. Can sometimes pick up stuff they not supposed to :p
Just check that it doesn't pick up your hermits

Manic : glad iv been watching him as he was unhappy at the bottom of the tank so I moved him up and now he seems much happier, the site i looked at either had bad info or I was looking up the wrong coral!

there seems to be some "bugs" living at the base of the yellow cup, I tried syringing warm water to get the bugs to move but no luck, they are still there.

Do I need to remove them, and if so what should I use?

Thanks guys!

Ah, some pics of the tank and my new inverter which actually got a test run last night, My GF was cooking dinner and a globe in the extractor hood above the stove blew and tripped the power to the whole house! the tank carried on running as if nothing was wrong and the inverter didn't even beep about the load!

Green Star Polyps (stole them from my work tank)

Rose Coral - looked like it might die at work, after 2 days in the RSM and target feeding it looks brilliant!

Giant Cup Mushroom - this baby is about the size of a mini CD at the moment, he will get much bigger! it was under a BIG giant cup mushroom we bought for work and wasn't doing well cause it was being smothered by the big one, so snipped the rock and took him to my tank where he is happy!

yellow cup coral - after reading up on this guy the yellow isn't natural, people dye the hard part of the coral which is naturally a chocolate brown, just the polyps are supposed to be yellow. The article I read said there is a very good chance the coral would not last a week due to the stress of the dye but with some good care it may survive, and mine is doing well! target feeding and good light thanks to the RSM and you can see how the hard part of the coral is starting to go back to its natural colour! Personally I think it looks much nicer with the contrast of the bright yellow polyps against the brown stony part!

looking fantastic!
nice fish, my scopas is my fav fish!

just remember with the goby to provide food in the substrate for him

The goby likes the pellets, he waits till they in the substrate then scoops them up. Makes a bloody mess but I like him

they are cool!
i have a tuxedo urchin too, real cool character

dallasg: he's hilarious how he gets crap stuck to him the whole time.every now and then I try pull some of the stuff off but then he lets out all his little "tentacles" and I don't want to pull those off

dont damage those, they wont like it...
what i do is get some nori stuck on him and he pulls it around for my tangs
