Speak to @AD Scott from aquarium depot, he should know I think they supply the reef octopus skimmers.

i have the Ext XP range

i dont think those are available, might be USA only
 
The first pic in post #1 looks like a normal bubble blaster with a dc pump and they call it diablo thats all.
I still dont see the need for a dc pump on a skimmer. well for me that is.

Unless you buy a massive dc pump skimmer and use it on a smaller tank then you can lower the speed..and lowering the.speed means less air intake it makes sense in that way.

I think they trying to replace the ball valve electronically...lol
 
The one pictured right on top is the same skimmer body as mine, but it's the pump that's different. DC pump.
 
I think so too @Ridwaan, however they are quieter and more energy efficient, that's from what I have heard and read.

Hi All. Yes, they are supposedly more quiet and energy efficient. The good news is that we do have them on order and they should be here end of the month. We have multiple in-sump and external recirculating models coming in. Plus a few other new goodies too. But we're not brining in the open volute design.

There are probably a few other small benefits of the DC-controllable skimmer pumps. Like toning it down when you're feeding something (food or supplement) that would normally over-activate the skimmer. Or being able to really fine-tune the skimmer between the air draw & water level. IMO it's wouldn't be worth paying a lot more for it, but luckily it's not much more than the other high-end skimmer pumps we do.
