I've had this purple monti some months now and its been growing like a beast. This is only half of the monti as i have fragged it into two. The issue is its polyps. The monti itself is a beautiful deep purple yet the polyps are an ugly brown. Over the course that i've had it its polyps have been extending more and more, now so much that i cannot even see the purple underneath. Just this brown. At the bottom you can see some of the purple sticking out. Whats the reason for the polyps going nuts like this? In the tanks where i've seen purple montis its never like this. Is it not getting enough light that its trying to filter feed or something? Surely 150W MHs are enough for them?

I would say food perhaps, try direct more flow onto them so they will be able to feed better and wouldn't have to extend so much?

lol maybe we should hybridize yours and mine and get a purple monti with purple polyps and a brown monti with brown polyps. The brown version can be a 'begginer coral'. As long as its not white that is its true colour :p

i bought a few sps frags, they were under 6000k t5s, my t5s of 12000 and 18000k took them 1 week to change from brown to green and orange

@ Scuba , I have the same monti and around the edges especially it's the same nice purple colour but towards centre , it's polyps are extended as in your case. It's directly under a 150w metal halide.

So I too would like to know why ???

1st time I've seen such a Monti- and I like a lot
Thanks sean, this specific one is super rare, there is only one. Well, two. I'll start the bidding for the other one at R50000

Mine is purple the whole way through. Deep deep purple. If i disturb the coral you will see the colour. Infact i will do just that. Are your polyps as extended as mine? As in as numerous? This is the kind of extension i'm used to on milliporas

Better send me that frag u promised so I can set it right in my tank...maybe its just scared of your aiptasia and is disguising itself. ;)

its funny, your frag doesnt show half this much extension. Very wierd.

Hope u not planning on swapping it out. :p

But seriously, isnt the frag in another setup under different conditions? Maybe check the difference in conditions.
