Power outages

Just a quick question on the 1073.05 return pump. According to the specs the head height at 24V is 3.9m and at 18V is 2.5m. So what is it at 12V?

Because if your tank is on a 900mm stand and your tank is 500mm tall thats already 1.4m. Add just one 90 degree elbow that goes back into the tank and thats a head height 1.7m. I suspect the flow will be very little and on tall tanks you might not even get any flow.

Opinions?

the 12v @ a height of 1.7m with that 90degree elbow wont be round about 700l/h which in my opinion is enough to keep the Grim Reaper away and provide enough oxygen for the system for the duration of the outage.
The other day we had a 3hr disruption with no ill effects at all, my safety connector runs my 6105 strem.
 
The best info I can find is that the 1073.05 does 1.9m head height at 15V. Which makes me believe that at 12V the pump will not be able to get over 1.5m height.

Anyone have the exact specs?

@butcherman , what head height do you have on this pump and what is the flow like running off of the battery?

Agreed. Even if you didn't have the head loss, I don't think that it can be used as a primary return pump for a large tank, 1,5m +. That's why I went for the 6105 pump with battery backup. It's given me the peace of mind that I can get home in time to start my gennie. The performance of the pump is similar to that of my 12000l/hr seio. Don't know if the magnet holder can be used on glass thicker than 10mm? Mine just holds.

There's quite a bit of equipment that has to be hidden, but considerably less than a normal inverter with a battery I'm sure.

Bottom line.... Peace of mind.

Germany has come back with the following info, they are still busy with the interzoo show so no conclusive tests will be done till after the show. However 2010 tests @ 1.5m height showed that a 12v battery even with a 24v jumper would only get to about 700l/h.
I would strongly recommend that the safety connector be used only with the electronic stream pumps for a much better result. When we had power outages for that whole time we ran 1 x 6105 Tunze Stream without any adverse effect on our biotope
 
Thanks for the info George. Only problem with running it on the stream pumps alone is that the sump does not get oxygen and since this is quite a big part of the filtration it could be a potential problem.

But the 1073.05 will still work nicely in this way for a tank that does not have a high head height.

I am still more than happy with my 1073.05 and safety connector we had 6 hour power failure the other day and my tank showed no ill side effect what so ever. I attribute this to my return pump and battery backup.

What about running 2 x 12v dc batteries in series like on truck with a 24v intelligent charger?

Would that not increase the pumps output to mach the 24v jumper curve?

Turbelle® stream 6105 and 6155 are pumps with
an electronic motor. Thus, they can be operated on
any direct-current source (battery, solar cells) from
10 V to 24 V. For a safe connection of the pump, we
recommend the Turbelle® safety connector (article
No. 6105.50) (1), which contains a 4 amps fuse.
The safety connector permits normal operation with
the TUNZE® power supply unit (2), but in case of
a power failure it will automatically switch over to a
battery (3) or a direct-current source. Always ensure​
a correct charge condition of the battery
 
Do you think that much oxygen is used by the dsb? I've often wondered if any oxygen is used at all.

That is exactly why it is better to use the Stream 6055, 6095, 6105, 6155, in the tank where 90% of the oxygen is required. Besides your live rock in the tank is more than enough biological filtration to do away with the dsb.
I will be shortly building my new tank without any dsb, bio reactors , only mechanical filtration and protein skimming with my existing live rock as I'm convinced after the tank at the University is doing so well with just that.
