Hi Gaz - depends on what you want to do with it.... for swimming, snorkeling, free-diving purposes, then a camera like what Heline's got will be PERFECT for you. If you want to take it down SCUBA diving, then no - you should then get a camera with a seperate housing that's guaranteed to go down to the depth you want to SCUBA dive with.... Camera plus housing: +-R6000. (Perhaps SLIGHTLY cheaper - but not much). Camera like Heline's +-R3500 to R4000.... (depending where you shop). I have seen similar camera's (different brands, though) for +-R2500....

If I would not have used my camera (old model already - not the BEST pictures) for SCUBA diving, I would have bought one like Heline's.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the nice comments :)
I have to say this little camera really impressed my. I think it's a great outdoors/holiday camera.

I will only go snorkeling - this little baby is waterproof up to 3m. I will not go deeper than that because I stay close to the water surface :blushing:

It's got great settings specifically designed for taking under water pics. It takes nice 'out-of-water' photos too. By this I mean is that it's not specifically designed for under water pics only :) It takes nice full tank shots too. Only thing is the slow shutter speed, the drawback of all digital cameras that is not SLR.

Seashell, some questions, if I may:

1. From what I've read it does not have manual focus (like most non-SLR's) - when taking underwater pics does it sometimes focus on the wrong subject? This really bugs me when using a compact to take photos of something in the tank from the outside (it often then focuses on the glass...)?

2. I presume the camera still has a usb connection, and a battery compartment. How are these areas, and the shutter release, made waterproof?

Thanks,
Hennie

I know what you mean Reef Maniac. If your glass is slightly dirty it will focus on that

I am still in awe of the softies you keep, since last I read your tank info, now you just make me cry by taking such nice shots and really bringing out the health and colour of your soft corals. Ammmaaazzzing shots........

Hi Hennie,

I was a bit worried about dunking the camera in the water :) but it's made to be dunked!! LOL!!

There's 2 slots: 1 for the usb cable and 1 for the battery & memory card. These are both water tight with rubber fittings. They say in the manual to take care & make sure these are shut before venturing into the water.

I think we forget how technologically advanced we are getting. The rest of the buttons looks like a normal camera. All I can think of is that it has a rubber membrane on the inside of the camera beneath the buttons - kind of like the key pads of some of the mobile phones which covers you can change.

Thank you very much for the nice comments Sean. Coming from someone with an amazing tank like yourself is really nice. :blushing:

Palmerc, I also encountered this problem with my cybershot as well as my cellphone in the beginning. What I do is to put the lens against the glass and it works well, if too close to a coral, I move away, still hold the lens at an angle against the glass, but just further away. It works for me....

Sorry for not answering!!! :blushing:

I would agree with Sean on this. I just hold my camera very close to the glass. Sometimes I even bump into the glass with my lens

Also make sure your glass in clean & close all the curtains to eliminate reflection.
