Orca nitra guard bio cubes discussion

I noticed a black powder like layer at the base of my sump since adding the biocubes. I followed the instructions using the "bomb" method.

Has anyone seen something like this before ?

The water went murky as well.

The pic is very unclear. However I think you got too little flow in the sump... @dallasg

@Rabbit. Did you rinse the cubes in RO water for 24hours as per instruction?

Anyhow. Yes... I have also seen that with my cubes. I just syphoned it out, & then it never appeared again.
I think it has something to do with the initial "eating" of nutrients by the bacteria, & the extra yeast thats on the cubes.
I didnt have any negative effects on the tank, except for a little black sediment on the bottom for a day or 2.

Yes soaked it as per the instruction. I'll do the same and suck it all out.

I'll make some changes to increase the flow

Thanks !

Coral food!!! :)

Wow, HE's ALIVE!!!! Great to see you around Irie!!!

Hi guys,
i recently used this product but my results have been limited, is it ok to place them under the protein skimmer? its in the second compartment of a TL550 under the skimmer.

alternatively i would think that i must put in the air stone and move it to third compartment?
are results better with only flow or is air flow required?

I don't know much about the TL550 but I will place it before the skimmer, and yes you need to run an air stone for the cubes to work 100%

Exactly how I have mines placed in my nano. Stopped the bomb method as there is a lot of micro bubbles that come out of the skimmer and pass through the cubes.

Sjoe...

Sorry if this has been asked before (26 pages is a LOOONG thread). I'm just wondering, how long does it last, and when do you know you need to replace it?

it lasts as long as it needs, there is no real answer and its based on nutrient levels of your tank, but around 4-6months, maybe longer

well as they work, they consume themselves and get smaller, so when your nutrients start to rise, the volume of cubes is to little for your bioload and tank size, so topping up is needed

Ah ok.

So the only way to know when to replace the media is either when nutrients rise (which can't be a accurate indicator as you may have introduced them by some means), or when the cubes start getting smaller. Definately interested in giving this a try but after my last water test a moment ago, I have a PO4 reading of 0 :tt2: -chuffed-

Thanks Irie Ivan for an informitive and descriptive review. I cant believe that LFS don't sell this product more often in Cape Town. I will be getting mine soon.

Hi all I have used this in my cube the cube is 400l I run orca bio cubes np pellet reactor some time back I bought a elegance coral the one with pink tips tank at that stage had been running for all most a year and with the orca bio cubes and np pellet reactor the elegance is nearly as big as a soccer the system is supper health sps are doing well I use the bomb method this is truly a excellent product thanks Orca cubes

Just a technical question!
When it says 500ML on a bottle of Orca Nitra-Guard
How much weight we should expect getting??
I bought a 500ML bottle and it only has 400gr of cubes in it!
just to be clear this is how much 100gr of cube is:

It's by ml in a jug not by gram weight

Seriously? We goingthere.... again... hahahaha.
@hadiosbourne

As Dallas stated, the product is sold per volume, not per weight.
To be more precise, the product is actually sold per volume needed for nitrate removal.
Don't have the exact details at hand, but if the bottle says 500ml will treat 500 L of water, then effectively, you are paying for nitrate treatment of 500L of water for every 500ml you buy. regardless whether said 500ml weighs a kilo, a gram or a ton, the quantity in a 500ml tub will treat 500 litres for arguments sake.
Another technical answer, the "salt" (apparently they taste salty, therefor they must be salt :tt2:) crystals in the cubes will dissolve once soaked in RO, and this will reduce the weight further....... again, irrelevant, as it will still treat 500 litres of water.

The product is sold by volume and not weight! I have calculated the required amount by volume in ml to volume of water in liters. What you have there seems correct

Cool, thanks for the explaination,
I was just wondering...
Me and a buddy of mine decided to get one together,
i was busy dividing it when i realised that:p
