Oceanarium/ Public Aquarium

Hi Warr! Many thanks for the pics! I don't understand - why would they be so stupid as to use such huge crushed coral pieces as substrate? They probably have HUGE flow and MAJOR filtering systems in place..... What do you think?

Couple of weird things, most of the tanks have "bubble makers". Flow in my tank is stronger than these tanks. I must say all tanks look pretty "dirty" compared to our systems.

Asked them why, they say they won't intervene unless they have major livestock losses.

Only feed fresh 'live" fish food, even to the small tanks. Also feed their nennies every day ?

I have a picture of some of the engine room (will post later), very BIG, but no sign of skimmers ?

They replace water with North Sea water, 100 000 l per week. They have a direct pipe (from the sea) into their engine room.

The amount of sea stars they have in their tanks is weird. The one tank has literally 1000's. Reckon they don't monitor losses, probably because they eat each other (dead ones) and keep reproducing.

Engine Room, as much as I begged, no ways they were letting me in there.

And for Predator and FW bunch, some piranhas, not a cool tank fish, hardly move at all.

I also took pics of the fresh water tanks, should I post them or have we seen enough of Amsterdam's Aquarium ?

Keep it marine;)

I don't think i will bother to go over to see this, unless you photography skills are momumentally bad (and i don't think so) i reckon the place is very poorly looked after, we have some fairly decent aquariums in the UK, not on a grand scale but all i have seen are better than the Amsterdam one.
Warr, do you think this is unjust? or a pretty fair reflection (not of your photography skills):)
The aquariums i would like to visit (locally ish) are Monaco, and Nautica (France) and in the UK, the Deep in Scotland(which i will be doing this summer as my Aunt lives about 5 mins drive from there:lol:

I was quite disappointed. Firstly all the weird husbandry going on, crushed coral, airstones etc. The water looks healthy but the tanks look a little neglected, not sure if this is intentional or what. Also remember this aquarium is in a huge zoo complex, so you may find the butterfly garden (very cool) or the polar bears are more important than these small tanks.

I would imagine, polar bears would draw more attraction than some of the fish displays, also cheaper to maintain.:( :(

Funny thing - I lived near Amsterdam for quite a while, BUT never went to the Amsterdam Zoo/Aquarium. I did indeed see the London Aquarium, as well as the Bournemouth Aquariums (will have to search for pics though - not sure where they are though).... BUT, I must say that the British aquariums are quite nice.

We have also been to the San Francisco Public Aquarium. Also really nice.....

IF I can get my wife to find some pics for me, I will post some....

Ok you got till 14h00 :whistling:

hey guys,
I missed the EL aquarium due to a lack of work time and had a few hours before flying out of PE last week. I took a camera and soem photos, but they are not great. Either i have a culling tendancy with photos that are not brilliant, or i was just doing a crap job.

Also the PE aquarium was one of the worst dissapointments i have had with regard to an official aquarium. Tanks were a real dissapointment and there was precious little worth taking a photo of.

I did get some of a really active octopus which have come out well.

I am not sure this is the right thread to drop them into, but seeing as the mods are so good at house keeping perhaps one of you guys can move it if required?:)

Oh and ID of these things is WAY out my limited knowledge, so perhaps you can full in too:)

Here are a few.....
