as more of us get experience in the hobby i think its important that we identify potential hazards which can harm us while doing what we love..

this guy had a terrable experience and i was thinking perhaps we should be looking at putting any experience simular to this in a thread..

i can definatley relate to the agitated sinuses after i have worked in my system so perhaps something is realeased while we work on our systems??

scary indeed, i experiencede similar from handling liverock with bare hands. since got rid of all zoas/zoos in tank, always use gloves when working in tank, and all is good.
 
Thanks Leslie and what an interesting read.:thumbup: reminds me a bit of the stray voltage in our tanks too, what that can cause

Yesterday I welded the cracks in my skimmer using a soldering iron - the cup was clean but the body still had muck on the inside. I developed a moerse headache - but that could simply have been the combination of acryl fumes and styrene solvent. Or maybe not.... :eek:
 
Be careful bud, i reckon we should try to keep our hand out the tank, but obviously there are times we need to put our hands in there, USE GLOVES.

Thanks again leslie, December came down with bad chest infection. This reminds me that i moved this coral below from my nano tank to the new one, during that period and felt bad the next day. Maybe being a hypercondriac, but after reading these threads making me wonder as well. Also something has come to light as i am writing this. I have become alergic to shellfish in the last 2 years would even go as to say since i have owned a marine tank, don't want to say handling zoas and palys has caused this but i can't be sure. I just blamed it on eating to many crayfish. As soon as i eat any shellfish, i start to swell up and my face turns into a red ball. Makes you wonder. But i still love marines, must just be cautious in the future

what facinates me is that we have probably all done something like this felt a little queezy had a pain killer and slept it off....

Many corals are extremely toxic with the worst of all, zoanthids; some singular zoas have enough toxins to kill many full sized humans.

The next are sponges, live rock comes with a variation of extremely toxic types.

When I boil and bleach base rock and later make my own live rock out if it by placements, even if it has only a little life, I am very careful with that water its been in that’s full of toxins.

The rock goes out into the weather for quite a while before use it after that.

That enables no pests in the aquarium and a more solid bio start.
