My new tank project

Hi Chikaboo, thanks that sounds like an awesome skimmer. 6k is bit more than I was wanting to spend though and am going to try spend half that. Will ask LFS to get me some good prices on it though. Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated.

Quick question - Can I actually have 3 X 5000l/hr return pumps pumping into my display tank? Will the overflow handle this and is this ok?
Anybody have any experience with this?

For flow I am planning return pumps that have been plumbed in the sump (I don't want pumps in the DT and want to have a clean look). I was thinking of 3-4 return pumps plumbed into my display with wither T-shaped or L-shaped outlets to provide uneven flow.
The pumps I had in mind were 3 Reeftek 5000l/hr. The LFS says this is quite strong (I originally wanted 4).
If they are too strong I will just extent the pipe and add another head outlet.
The Reefteks seem to be the best priced and have a good name.
Any suggestions?

It really boils down to trial and error Honda - remember the pump say 5000Ltrs/hr but that if it were pumping in a straight line - now add the height it must work to get up the tank and squeeze through your plumbing it's no more 5000ltrs/hr it would have dropped tremendously! Why not arrange with the LFS that if it is too strong that you be able to swop them for smaller pumps and keep a credit for "something" later- in that way you dont lose and neither do they - win win situation:thumbup:

Have you got space behind the tank for a closed loop pumping system rather ? I also tried the big return pump route to avoid the need for powerheads in the tank and it's not working out too well, balancing the system is difficult and I've come across micro bubble problems at high flows. I'd avoid taking the entire flow down to the sump and all the way back up again - it would be easier to have a smaller system at tank height just dedicated to movement.

Thanks Chikaboo, I was thinking about this. If it turns out too strong, I will just add another outlet into the tank.

Eric - thanks, I will mention your micro bubble problem to the LFS and see if they can go CLS. I am trying to have all problems taken care of through speaking to everybody here so that it all goes well on installation and setup.

I guess I am asking for Utopia (not a bad tank name if I pull it off:) )

I am wanting to stock a few softies (my 2 current pincushions, an anenome) as well as a few colourful LPS.
I know you need MH's for these, but am worried about the adverse affects of heat and though maybe 8X39w or 54w would be better and provide a greater spectrum of colour and more ability to perfect the colour spectrum.
Any ideas or suggestions guys?
I would like to order soon so I have all the equipment before the tank is built.
Thanks

Anybody have any suggestions on my light question? T5x8 or Real Inc 2X150wMH+2X54wT5?
Anybody have a Real Inc unit? Also what compares in this price range?

Can anyone offer any alternatives on the pumps I am looking at?
Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi all, last question on the height? LFS recommended 650 height, but I am worried about the tank size and volume starting to get away from me. I want a wide tank and don't want it too deep, thats why I thought 600mm height would be fine.

I am concerned that a 650 height will affect my lights and also push my volume up another 50litres. This is without a sump as well.

Just worried I am not prepared for such a large tank and volume.

Thoughts?

The size is 1300lX700wX650h. They recommended I go higher on the sides (up from 600mm).

honda here are my thoughts

try get as much width rather than height built into the tank it will help with things like scaping etc

for ClS and return pumps look at AM Ocean runners they are low wattage and offer a high water delivery to top it all off they are very reliable,

skimmers are something to spend money on, its worth it in the end im running a DNW250 on my 4ft and barley have algae growth, this skimmer is a real asset and i will always run an oversized skimmer on a setup.

lighting is a difficult one for me to comment on ATM, im in the process of deciding between the 2 x 150w by 2 x T5 unit i own or converting to an 8 x 54w T5 unit, if i go the latter i will build my own as i want as mych reflection from the unit as possible.

a 6 x 54w unit will be in excess of R5K

i will go through the thread agaiin and see what i have missed, im just sneaking a peek here at work

This is a tank I like for it's nice neat lines and lighting.

Some more pics of tanks that I think are awesome and something I would like to take ideas from. Leslie found this thread and it's one where it has given me a lot of inspiration. Great build and excellent looks!!!

I particularly like the return outlets and no pumps in my tank. My desire to go this route was cemented this afternoon when I found my anenome stuck solid in my hang-on skimmers pump. He was so stuck, I had to remove the head of the pump and even then he wouldn't budge.
He was corked so tightly in the inlet that when I blew on the other side, I wasn't even able to blow through to try push him out.
Anyway, after a few minutes he relaxed and dropped out and is now recouperating. He looks to be fine and doesn't have any major damage.
Dumba$$!!!

Here's some pics of live stock and SPS and LPS that I have seen and liked and is the direction I would like to follow. If I have perhaps posted pics of anybody else's tank from the forum, I would like to acknowledge your hard work and excellent tank through my wanting to emulate your system, and the pics are a compliment to you.
Everyone else, enjoy!!!!

Honda ...you chose some awesome pics..I dont know all of them, Please keep one thing foremost in your mind,

The tanks with LS you see were not built in a day (almost like rome), be patient and be religios about your maintenance program...it will pay off big time in the end

Hi guys, the problem with pics are they eat your cap in no time,so month end and pics have halted my slideshow. Will do some more tomorrow from work.can still check and reply from my phone, just no ones posting. Frans, thanks for your reply-I hear what you are saying and certainly dont expect that for at least 2years.The tank design and pics are benchmarks for me to reach. The proverbial reaching for the stars. With the advice on the site, hopefully,I can get there.Cheers
