DIY grounding probe

Earth your tank.

I had my tank tripped late at night twice, for some reason I just did not see. After unplugging one device after the other, retrying the DB board after each removal. I eventually found the culprits. One time it was the wire that cracked as the entry point of a Buyo powerhead. The other time a heater somehow got water in. Both these would have shocked me crazy the next morning, feeding the fish barefoot. Much better to have a DB board tripping the whole house than me lying in a coffin.

Do earth your tank. Low voltage from induction will not harm anything. But open 220V will.

Open ends 220V will cause harm, but if it trips immediately, it will not.

Damn really, when was this and who was the member... Thats really bad..

Ground your tanks, it can kill you or a child.
Take note that small children feel electricity a lot worst than grown ups. If your tank gives you a bite on a paper cut, see if a child barefoot can stick his finger in. No it zaps them a lot worst than grown ups.

Shame thats sad...

Think this thread needs to be bumped every now and then for the newbies or even experienced reefers to know the danger.

I can feel a slight current in my tank when having a small cut. Going to do the same to my tank in this week still...

Look this is a huge eye opener for me. I never thought of it. But I have my SS316 filler wire and junction box in my hand. First thing I do when I get home.

most lfs have the titanium grounding probes

most lfs have the titanium grounding probes

I saw that once at a LFS, will try and get a price other wise the DIY wont cost anything as i have all those...

I know at one stage there was a concern relating to the probes in the tank. Something with electrolysis. Has this been laid to bed?

Has this been laid to bed?
yes.

That will be an issue if you got high voltage and the earth leakage do not drop.

But what is better, some electrolysis while the earth leakage drop? Or you dead next to the tank? And do not laugh.

Nope, not laughing at all trust me. And I presume the titanium will cause the least amount of electrolysis in the tank.

Added a grounding probe to my tank thanks for the great DIY,before I saw this I was willing to spend some hard earned cash on a bought probe

Shooo, I need to do this soon and I did not check my wiring in a while, my heaters are fairly new buy the uplift wires old...

Thank you... time to get a probe... I shocked a few times... hardly touched the water and got zapped

Just bumping this thread to maybe save lives. Take note guys. I am definitely gonne be putting a grounding probe in my sump. DO IT GUYS!!! Better safe than sorry.
