CW`s Saltwater Reef

Hi there

I’m done with the DIY fan chiller.
Some pics.

Used my last grip seal stain for this, could only give it one coat.
But it looks ok.

Didn’t stain the whole inside because when the power supply is in you can’t see it.

Only painted the fan frame black. Two very thick coats.
If the unit works well ill take the frame for black powder coating.

But for mow I’m in the testing phase.
So far it looks like the unit works to keep the temp between 26 and 26.9 at the most.
Then the outside temp is 27 at the most so far.
So i think the 8x 12v pc fans should work.
Later when i see it works i will also get better fans with a higher CFM.

[FONT=&quot]I kept the molex pc connectors on the power supply. I might need to replace them later with something more concealed.
I’m a bit scared about the salt creep and water evaporation.[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]I’ve given the unit two separate switches, one for 4x fans and another for the other 4x fans. The unit also has a red LED light to tell you that the unit has power.[/FONT]

And there we have it.
I’ve fastened it to the wooden tank cover i built with three screws.
It won’t fall into the tank.
I’ve also placed a temporary wooden cover over the top up tank for the DIY fan unit power supply to rest on. Later on i will box the tank top up tank as well and make small shelving for all the food and tank goodies.

Well then. Now i just have to wait and see if this works like i want it to.

But i might be able to get some egg grating in vereeniging.
I hope they can get black for me.
 
What tank is that behind your system? Is the complete tank RO water?

Have you thought of coupling it with an automatic temperature switch ?

Thats a 1000mm x 350mm x 300mm top up tank.
Clean RO water.

I did post pics on that unit.
I dident put any title but i added it onto my CW saltwater reef post.

Sure Niel.

I used about 2m flat bar and about 2m angle iron.
Don’t know the cost on that but it won’t be more than about R75 per 6m length i think.

So the break down:
Steel - R200 +-
8x 12v 120mm PC fans R50 each (depending on plain black or blue lighted fans)
1x 400w pc power supply R250
Pine wood for control box +-R100
2x power switches R15 each (i took mine out broken power supplies.
1x LED light R0.50
Staind - Still had some left, otherwise R65 for 500ml
Varnish - Still had some left , otherwise R130 for 1L
Black steel cote - For painting the fan frame R58 for 1L

Total from scratch will then be +- R1233.50
Keep in mind that if you work on this cost you will have some paint, varnish, stain, wood and steel left.

It will be cheaper if you try to use what you have in the garage.

I do not like that. Anything goes wrong and your ATU drops 100L into your system. Hypo it before you get home. I like a RO chamber to be big enough to be able to go away over a weekend. Thats it.
Also the water would take days before its pumped to your tank. And in that time it absorbed easily a lot of things. Check other posts about storing RO water.

But That tank would make out a nice refugium:whistling:

No its not Auto top up.
There’s a valve that i have to open before it runs into the return chamber in my sump.
Don’t have a Auto top up pump yet. Don’t think i want that cos I’m also scared if something goes wrong.

I also want to close it up with pine wood (stained and varnished) so nothing can fall into it.
I was thinking about putting a power head in the top up tank at the bottom so that the water keeps moving in the tank. Don’t think its good if the water stands still for a long period of time.


What do you think?

Great that you have got sufficient live rock...i suggest you put all in your display tank,none is needed in the sump really...You have quite a high tank so maybe try to make two islands or one higher island so that your tank has some sort of depth of field to it but also leave some places completely empty from top to bottom to give you a reef cliff or two....just a suggestion of course you can go for what you like best buddy.

So far the tank is coming along nicely and I agree with the others you should be proud of your diy:thumbup:.
 
I like your pc fans. You given me the idea to do it for my own tank.

New Coral and fish

Hi ppl

I just added some coral i bought from Mandarin.
I also bought 1x Fox Face and 2x Fire gobies.
But I’ll get them later.



1x Tube worm
1x Purple shroom
6x Metalic green mushroom (all on one small rock)
1x Pink colt

That foxface looks good man :) .. How is it doing? A fox face is on my list on inmates so Im interested.. Read that they are supposed to be relatively easy to keep
