Aquavitro 8.4 leading to high Alk???

Hi all

Been dosing the Aquavitro range with a marine magic triple doser for a while.

Using: 8.4, calcification and ions on the doser, and fuel manually.

Parameters as follows:

pH: 8.2
Alk: 10.5 :eek:
Calcium: 420
Magnesium: 1350
Salinity: 1.026

It seems the 8.4 is pushing my alk a bit high. I've noticed some corals nopt opening up as much as they used to (pincushion and torch) and my plating monti and trumpet corals look like they might be slightly burnt - lost 2 heads of the trumpet, and some white splotches are appearing on the monti.


Am running bio cubes with a DSB. The cubes have only been in for 3 weeks, (my nitrate test kit is long expired, must get a new one) so my suspicion is that as the cubes kicked in and the nutrients dropped, the high alk is affecting my corals.

So, the question is do I change the range I am dosing or just the amounts? Obviously will do a few water changes in the next few days.

alk is not connected to the nutrients, so cubes, NO3 or PO4 cannot be the issue. :)

just stop dosing the alk and let it drop naturally, 10.5 is ok, had mine at 14 and no issues.
what salt are you using for the water change?
 
what is happening is your alk consumption is slowing down and you still dosing the same...
use the next couple of days to see the consumption from 10.5 to about 8, then you have your daily average and adjust dosing pump
 
Its been said that when a tank is running on low nutrients and alk is high that they get burned tips on SPS. Clearly you are dosing too much of the 8.4 so you will have to recalculate your consumption and adjust the doser accordingly.
 
just remember all changes must be done slowly

and i wouldnt do a water change to correct your alk, it will mess with other params, let it come down naturally
