Hmmm we had a long awaited shipment arrive today ! For the guys waiting we will deliver as we have time ;)

Any idea if one could rip out the stock RSM 130 lights and just slot the 85w unit in its place?

I would not recommend it, this is an active cooled unit and the moisture inside a closed hood would be too much.

A few guys have successfully fitted out 600mm CREE units into the RSM130 hoods and very happy with its performance, pm me if you want to know more.

I have a tank 3m X 0.8m X 0.8m. What light would I use
Fish only?
Or with corals?
And then, what type of corals?
Rock scaping, is it high or low? How high can you mount your corals?

But seeing that you posted in a specific LED thread, then I assume you rather wanted to know how many of these units?

The 85w clusters got a coverage of 60x60x70cm. Just not enough to cover your tank front to back. Might need to go for the 170W mounted 90 degrees to the tank so that the coverage do get from the front to the back. But that on depend on how wide is your rock structure, but then again, do not want the front of the substrate to be in the dark.

Then at 60cm wide, for 3m tank you would need at least 5 units. I will go for 6 so that there is some overlap. It does depend on the height of the rock stack. If high, you might end up with spot light effects with only 5 units, as you do not have overlaps. So 6, maybe even more units.

6 x85w or 6 x170w

I doubt the 85W will cover the tank from the front to the back. The 170 turned 90 degrees might.

I got 4 Radions on a 1.5m tank. My rock stack is high. When I had 3 units, the spotlight effect was noticeable. Now with 4, there is a lot more overlap between the units and I do get a lot better looking tank with much more uniformed spread of light.

Remember leds are more spotlights where T5 did spread much better. The centre under the unit will be blasted with light and 20cm to either direction will have a lot less light.

To describe the overlaps needed. Simple diagram. Hope its clear enough

@RiaanP, thanks for your valid input here.
@tyronvs, you got us scratching our heads now. Whatever way you look its going to be a little expensive to cover that beast :)

I would ask myself first:

1) how desperately do I want LEDS for this size tank
2) Compare pricing between T5/MH vs LED's, If vastly different then choose based on your affordability. For 3m you will also need 2 x 80W T5 units, probably about 12 tubes, think of the cost of repalcing the tubes into the furture.
3) How much are you willing to spend - I can tell you now, going leds will be nothing under 10K
4) The future - You say softies only now, I guarantee that thought will change 6 months into your tank running. Buy lighting now leaving your options into the future.

If you are clear on all the answers above and still want to go LEDS then read on.

Initially I would go for 3 x 175 Units all in a row (these guys go easy 900cm in length), BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY bearing in mind that you might need some additional 85W fill ins.. Raising these high enough wont give you the spot light effect, but will reduce PAR on substrate. Most guys run these units at 65% and happy with the PAR levels. In your case you can use the full power but raise the units to achieve maximum spread.

I have a feeling you will be happy with just 3 x 175W units and maybe a couple of fill ins, but its very important your limitation is not mounting height.

I hope I make sense, if not please tell me where you are unclear.

Thanks Andre. Yeah that is why I'm asking, was thinking if these had timers built in I'd get one of these and sell my current light rather than getting a controller for it. How much do the controllers for these ones go for? I am moving at month end so will see if I have any cash left after that then make a decision on it.

Hi @Andre@ReefAquatics. What size tank have you got these lights on? Will you guys get in the 255w of these lights in some time?

This is a picture our supplier has sent us, from a reef in the Philippines, looks like a 1200 x 600 x 600.

We don't normally bring in the 255W and greater units, but can order and will arrive 2 weeks later.
