Anemone propagation

hello friends
As im sure many of you are aware ,the majority of ornamental anemone species are in great need of captive propagation!
the collection of anemones for the ornamental trade is in no way sustainable and wild populations will take hundreds of years to recover from even mild harvesting

I will show you how simple and effective anemone propagation is and urge anyone with the space and time to try this! please

firstly your stock must be healthy ,well fed and stress free sor several months ,This is very important for success

iv decided to use a common carpet anemone (stichodactyla) for this demonstration
firstly you eill need

an anemone

a very sharp knife/blade
i have decided to use a fileting knife

you will wanto make a clean cut through the centre of the anemone
like this

after the cut

please dont forget to rinse the anemone in a basin of tank waer after cutting it, this is very important as it release toxins under extreme stress that WILL wipe out yor system

not not even five minutes after the cut and the anemone is aleady showing sichns of healing the two effected areas are pinching closed

here are the two halves just 30 minutes after being returnet to the grow out systen

If it's this easy, I think all anemone owners need to propagate (when big enough) and we stop putting strain on the natural oceans.

Any idea how long till you can split again after initial cut ?

Kudo's Calvin, I never had the heart to do this to my anemone, although I always wondered if I should or shouldn't.

Wait till it eats your next tang. I'm sure you'll find the heart to frag him then...

Looking great Calvin, but a bit of advice to newbies to propagating, if you are unsure whether your anemone state of health is up to it, ask people like Calvin and Brenda, to name only two on this forum, for advice. I'm sure they 'll give proper guidance.
