A simple but clever water chiller idea from the computer overclocking community

Here's what I'm thinking. Assuming you could fit the thing in your sump space and have enough air contact time to make it cool effectively (the computer guys tend to run at least 1m of updraft), you could simply keep the bottom end open (maybe drill some holes around the bottom perimeter) and stand it in your sump. On the top you organise a sort of hat, which allows any spray to run down the outside of the bong, down into the sump (like the froth guard thingy on a skimmer).

You probably need a fair amount of pressure to get a mist out of those irrigation sprinkler heads. It will probably just dribble like it's got a prostate problem when it's got a tiny pump connected to it.

LOKL ,,, and another statement that made my day!! I think we need to give this thing a go... That froth stopper was the "sponge" i was revering to... Now i know the name of it... Have a quick search here on MASA for that evap cooler that one of the sponsors sell. You could make a very neat DIY of that...
 
it would even work with the water just running down the insides of the tube as long as the fan is strong enough

Seriously though, the idea will work, efficiency dependant on humidity though. Those irrigation misters or industrial mist nozzles as sold by spraytech in CPT come to mind...... Hmmmm, some time on my habnds this holiday.....

:lol::lol: @irie ivan, just make sure its a chiller you building and not the bong, dont think the fish and corals would want to start floating out the tank.:whistling:

Hmmm I too have lots of time on my hands now, might try build one too...

Some of us have to make our own toys as we simply cannot afford shop toys... This is africa after all.
 
And bongs have been around since longer.... I know cause i built lots...

nope, the spray would be too fine and the fan will blow it out the top. Plus you will not have the pressure to spray it. A drip plate would be just as effective, providing that the plate is slightly smaller in diameter than the pipe and would allow the air to escape past it.

Even using a very big grit net inside the chamber to allow the water to rather run down the net instead of dripping all the way to the bottom would be better. Or a big grit sponge. But then you need to ensure that it does not block up or that it becomes a biological filter. As long as it does not block, then being biological would not matter. Filling chamber with bioballs is another option. Again, as long as it does not block up, then it could even be a biological filter at the same time. Not sure what the impact would be on your Orca Cubes...

But when it does go biological, then you cannot simply turn this unit on and off? Need to clean it out first after every time it was dried out.
 
would prefer to have an air tube circle(to feed water to top of the chill pipe with holes pointing to chill pipe wall allowing it to run down the inside of tube while air will exit up through the middle and pull out heat and it wont splash
 
it can also be built using the overflow of your tank so that you would only need to power the fan

but a fail safe needs to be build in in case of it blocking up. But yes I would also use the free gravity to drive the water flow through this system.
 
Doubt whether a nitrate factory would influence the effeciency of the cubes, in fact, i suspect it would assist them in their po4 removal ability.
