49 Year Old Tank

I took this picture in Bora Bora and long nose butterflies are rather common there and they have no trouble living with the very large fish of the South Pacific. They have their niche with their long nose and can pull food from deep holes. The wild ones in the picture seem to have longer snouts than the ones in our tanks. Maybe because those fish are not collected in Bora Bora being so remote from just about everywhere. I am sure their snouts kept evolving longer to get at those elusive worms because other fish there also have long snouts to get at that food but no where near as long as these butterflies.
They don't dive in the coral as that nose is very fragile and their jaw looks as if it would break just by thinking about diving in coral. If they damage that mouth, they die. They can not eat much at one time and must forage all day. They also can not tear food into pieces like many fish can. They try by shaking their heads but those tiny teeth are practically useless for tearing and I would imagine just by the physics of their anatomy that if they shake too hard they would crack their jaw.
These types of fish along with mandarins, seahorses and pipefish need to eat at least a few times a day, preferably all day but that is not usually possable in a captive reef which is why these types of fish are considered "difficult". It is not their fault that they are difficult, but ours. They live quite well if their needs are met especially in regard to food. If we were fed half a cow once a day and were not allowed to use our hands. And it was consumed by other creatures in a matter of seconds, we would also starve,
But if that cow was cut up in tiny pieces and re plenished every few minutes, we would not have a problem.
I personally feed my fish in the morning with some live worms. That is mainly to keep the long nose healthy and many of the other fish are not up yet because they can eat more food at one seating so they get along with the last meal in the afternoon.
Then I give the tank new born brine shrimp every day.
The shrimp are for the tiny bluestripe pipefish, the clown gobies and some corals like the gorgonians. The other fish eat them but I think they think of them like M&Ms because they are just too small to supply much nutrition.
If I did not feed worms and baby shrimp, I would not be able to keep these fish long enough for them to die of old age. I would not have a fish that I was not willing to care for. The fish we keep should not have to adapt to our world but we should at least try the best we can to have the world we create for them to be as close as possable to their world. We can not give them an ocean to swim in but we can and should at least supply them with what they need and what they recognize as food.
No matter how nutritious it is, if they don't recognize it as food, they will not eat it.

To update my tank seems to be doing wery well. The only thing I notice is that my 4 SPS corals are growing very fast as my LPS seem to be shrinking a little. This happens when you mix the two types of corals and I may start to introduce more SPS but I know what will happen to the LPS which I kind of prefer. At one time, years ago the tank was all SPS. I get bored and need to change it around every so many years.
The tank looks no where near what it looked like a couple of years ago before I lost most of the corals to a make up water problem but it looks pretty good, not as good as many tanks on here but it is the way I like it.

I know I have been saying this for months but I really need to remove all of the rocks and re aquascape. Due to some of the spawning fish and the dragon wrasse digging holes and re arranging everything all of the entire structure moved almost all the way to the front glass and I am having a hard time cleaning the glass or positioning the corals. The gorgonians are jammed against the front glass and I don't have room for anything. There is plenty of room in the back where I don't need it. I know I should have done this in the winter as now it is boating season and this will take all day.
If I ever do it I can also remove the dragon wrasse and give it away as it has grown too large and he has become a pain in the wrasse I will also stir the dolomite and clean it.
One problem is that I really like the aquascaping now and I know I will not be able to re create it. I always have a bunch of rocks left over when I do this. I also need to find tanks for all the corals. I guess I will also collect some water, pods and bacteria the next time I take out the boat as I have not added any of that since last year.
Oh the joy of reefing.

I have three 5 gallon buckets of rocks that never fit back in the tank. Every time I do this I make it more open and "airy" and those rocks that used to fill those places get sent to a storage bucket for future renovations.

The new LEDs seem to work. This is without the lenses on and with all lights at full brilliancy.
I temporarilly hung it on my tank like this and they seem to be almost twice as bright as my 300 watts of MH lights. I am seeing places in my tank I never knew existed. When I get the dimming working I will have to adjust it for more blue as it is too bright and white.

This is the MH lights. They almost look like the same brightness in the picture but the picture lies.
The LEDs are much brighter. The MH lights have a nicer color which is why I will have to dim the white lights and leave the blue lights on higher.
Notice in the MH picture, you can't see my powerheads at the sides of the tank. Now I will have to hide those.
I didn't try that yet but the fish all hid with the LED lights, they thought they were on a stage and had to perform

Hey Paul! yikes....i didnt realise that you've been so busy here with updates :)
I like all all the updates, im very interested in your surface skimmer, how is it fitted on your tank, where is the all the flows going as it has inlet and two outlets.

What LED make are you using?
How about a DIY post about your mojano zapper, your reef central thread is humorous, perfectly suited here on MASA.

I can't really do a DIY on the Majano Zappers any more as now I have a patent pending on it and am selling them through other people that have a vested interest.
You can read about it here. Majanowand.com

I don't have a sump and I don't trust any siphone going over the side of the tank. This DIY surface skimmer I forget about, it's just there and it seems it always has been there. I don't even remember when I made the thing. The tube on the left is connected to a powerhead behind the rocks in the tank. Water is sucked out of that tube and is sent to the DIY 5' high protein skimmer.
The surface skimmer is designed with no moving parts and the water level stays about in the center of it. Some water flows over the top to skim the surface but the rest of the water enters through that strainer on the right. As the water in the device gets lower, there is less preasure inside so more water enters the strainer on the right side to keep the level about half way down.
It has never broken or needed adjustment.
It hangs on the inside of the tank, behind the rocks with a plexiglass hook.

I am using "Rapid LED"
Here is the LED fixture showing the fans,
There is slots cut in the bottom of the fan housing and also in the aluminum tubing so the air is drawn through the tubes.

Now the thing is 99% completed. Here it is with the control box with the 3 dimmers and fan switch.

Here are the old (Plaza Hotel) MH lights. Anyone need any slightly used 150 watt 14,000K MH lamps? free.

Here is the new fixture hung over the tank, that of course is in the blue mode
IMG_1079.gif

This is with all the lights almost at full brilliancy.
So far after 30 minutes the fixture is still at room temperature.

All I have to do next is to build the pulley system so I can raise the fixture out of the way to remove rocks and what not. Now it is still hung on string.

That's quite a difference Paul, looks great, big improvement.

Hi PAul, always great to read up on your DIY builds.

Which specific LED's did you use?

im also busy with a DIY led unit, was'nt sure which make to go for. But now im convinced, if your doing it, and your not easily persuaded, then it must be a winner.

I cant make out from the pics, is it a total of 36 LED @ 3W each = 108W

What is the dimensions of your tank?

The difference in light intensity is amazing!

Definitely have way more light in the display than with MH's from what im seeing.

Hi All, i found this article, refered to me by a freind, i cant beleive the success of this dudes tank, i think he rubs stones together to keep it going ;)

I think that with the internet and forums such as these we loose site of the passion of the hobby. We copy anything and everything that looks cool without understanding how it works. No doubt automation is everyones ideal but the simplicity and power of nature cannot be under estimated. Simulate nature cause it has been perfected. The story below is about understanding what we are doing and how it affects our tanks.

A lesson for new and old.

Myself, i have been designing my new tank for the last 2 years and everytime there is a new craze i start rethinking my design to accomodate it. Our tanks should evolve and allowed to settle in. Changes must be made slowly as it has a major knock on effect to the delicate ecosystem that we control.

Happy reading and hope its useful.

Even has aptaisia in the DT LOL

Exactly, half are white and half, royal blue. I have the tank in a finished basement and when I look down the stairs, the entire basement is lit up in a blue glow. It is very blue without the whites on.
It is at least twice as bright as the MH lights and I don't run them anywhere near full brilliancy. It would just be too bright.
The tank is six feet long and 14 inches wide.

Even has aptaisia in the DT LOL
Those are majanos and I am purposely leaving them there and even feeding them to make them grow so I can take a video of my Majano killing invention..
....Will this still work the lg tray(scrubber)...?

Yes I designed it so that the tray is under the last row of LEDs
