im using kalkwasser in a AM stirrer connected to my auto top up.hopefully hooking up my CArx tonight.at the moment dosing 2 teasoons of red sea kalk everyday in my tank
 
Rod I recon you've started with a good dose, you can double on day 4. and then every week for your system add 0.5mm to the daily dose.

I started with 0.1 /100l and ended on 1ml/100l. The idea is to stop escalating when phosphates start dropping.

You have to measure phosphates (with an acurate kit) if you want to know how you're doing with regards to nutrient removal.

I found that I had to constantly add Nitrates to a readable level to get this method to work as my filteration system and liverock was making this limiting too.

You might want to add bac from Zeovit or Prodibo to help stop a monoculture from building up.

You should start getting extra nasty skimmate after a day or two.
 
Thanks, I wll follow that. I use 1/2 a teaspoon per day of Calcium Hydroxide, mixed with RO water and poured into the sump. All of it, no dripping!
Will Cycle do?

For interest's sake, what do you use to dose Nitrate?
 
And what is the advantage of making the phosphate the limiting factor as opposed to nitrate?
 
Sodium Nitrate.

I never had a problem with Nitrates they have always been 0 therefore they will automatically be a limiting factor.

Phosphates are normally more problem in a mature system with enough live rock or a DSB. I wanted an option other than phoshate removers which have been less than ideal in their removal capabilities IMO, also quite expensive when planning a move to a 4000l system

bob will this also apply to the dosage of vinegar?
 
I actually dose a 2/3 vodka 1/3vinegar mix. Something that the Vodka method gurus started using. to be honest I don't know. Its probably fine.

The zeo system uses vinegar to dose carbon, I don't know how much is right for purely vin use.
 
1. If your test kit is showing 0 it may well be a poor kit or old, what type is it. If you truly had 0 phospates, not only would your algae be dying, so would everything else.

2. No I'm sure you are doing this to rid yourself of the algae, once your Phosphates get low enough it will die.

3. You can use both, when your Phospates are low enough you won't need the PO4 reactor, and it might cause them to go too low. However if you want to track the progress of your Vodka dosing you will need an accurate test kit, at least a Deltec/Merck or equivalent standard of kit. When you are doing this tracking its good to not have the PO4 remover confounding your results.

Do not jump into this without reading the thread (long as it is) on reefcentral, and maybe looking at Sprung and Delbeek's (The Reef Aquarium Vol. 3) reveiw of the method.
 
another scenario i should have mentioned,is that i bought some corals that were covered with hair algea.before adding the corals to my tank,i gave them a good scrub down and washed in clean water before placing them into my tank.after a few weeks,the corals began to grow the algea back.could this be the cause of the hair alfea spreading onto some of my rock work?
