Tank Size

Hi Bruce - two comments:
1) perhaps have a complete frame built out of steel, that fits nicely OVER and through the hole in the wall you want to break through. In such a way, the tank is on it's own stand, and you can just clad the rest of the steel frame with thin wood - or alternatively build (or have it built for you) a wooden frame - that also fits through/over the proposed "hole-in-the-wall"..... instead of resting the tank on the wall at all....
2) I use an electronic feeder - I cannot/do not trust family - as they might either not feed at all, or overfeed.... All I trust the family for, is to give me status updates to let me know what the water level is, the temperature of the water (I have an electronic thermometer, with a digital display on the outside of the tank), and whether any fish died or not... (what they can see - that is)..... ;-)

I would rather like to automate as much as possible..... I even set my skimmers to run VERY dry when I go on leave - to ensure that the skimmers don't overflow while I am away...

Hi

What do you guys do when you go away, does the family feed or is there self feeders.
I have an automatic feeder, they cost about R250, it can feed up to 6 times a day, I have it set to 3 times a day and is good for almost 2 weeks, although I only let it run for 1 week otherwise the food starts to get damp and you run the risk of clogging up the feeder.

Any sponsors supply these feeders ?

Hi Hennie

Thanks for the advice. I don’t actually want to cast a slab, how about sturdy steel frames say of channel or tubing [what do you think]. The only reason being if I move I would like to leave the area open and take the tank.

OK, drill a small hole (say 12-16mm diameter) through your floor slab and see how thick it is. You should also be able to assess how hard (strong) the concrete is - does the drill just go right in, or does it take say 15 minutes to drill the hole? Once you know that, you can make a decision based on an "educated guess", and not just blindly.

If the floor is strong enough, I would agree with Jacquesb to build a steel frame for the tank. You should still be able to cast a thin "concrete" slab on top of the frame, which will be quite removable if you ever decide to relocate. This is what I've done on my 1.8m tank.

The slab is only 75mm thick, and was cast using Duragrout, a high-strength, quick setting structural grout available from any ABE branch. This stuff sets in about 10 minutes, and reaches a compressive strength of over 40MPa within a few days.

Hi

Thanks Guys very usefull. Dont really know what I want just yet, I might even stand the tank in a corner of the lounge, still deciding.Been to Moolis shop very cool must say.But there is still a long learnig task ahead for me. At least Im starting to understand that a marine set up is a 5 day game and not just a one day game.

a] Tank
b] Adequate sump filter
c] Live rock
d] Power Heads[how many for this tank]
e] Skimmer [in sump]
f] Pumps
g] Chemicals
h] Testing kit[I dont know waht, reliying on LFS]

Ive also got a thread running "Bio balls vs DSB

NIce ! Can I twist your arm to go 1350 x 750 x 700 ??

Well, it is a personal taste but once you have your substrate in and some base rock, when you aquascape before you know it you're at the top.. and later if you want SPS to grow you still want some open water space.. my tank is 1.1 ( longest part ) x 700 x 700 and I am happy with the depth, but if I could be like you and go 750 wide or even 800 wide I would be even happier.. just ran out of space. My tank is also custom shape similar to yours, the only problem I have is lighting... IMO, plan your lighting and then build your tank.. here is mine.

Add an auto top up to that and I would say you have most things sorted.

Tank
b] Adequate sump filter, I would definately go DSB
c] Live rock Get a good mix
d] Power Heads[how many for this tank]I wold get 4 M1100 SEIO or 4 x Boyu wavemakers, unless you prepared to fork out for the Tunxze
e] Skimmer [in sump]TS3-ReefTek, AM Blue,
f] Pumps The AM Ocean Runners or the Rio Hyperflow
g] Chemicals To start I wold just get calcium supplement
h] Testing kit[I dont know waht, reliying on LFS]Nitrate Nitrate Calcium and ALK for now
i] Sand/crushed coralSugar fine if its crushed coral, live sand is great as well
j] Lights MH or T5 I say decent T5's like the ATI or Giesseman

Thanks Kanga, when you talk about a good mix LR what do you mean? :blushing:

Get some Malaysian, some Fijian, some kenyan its just gives you better biodiversity in the system. i.e. more/different critters to help with filtration.

Sounds like a nice system you planning there:thumbup:

Yes it should be but now I have a decision to make. Either wall security[waiting quotes] or Reef[waiting quotes], as we had a little incident at my place on Tuesday evening late. But we fine just a little bit edgy.
