Tank Size

Bruce, the skimmer can be plumbed directly and even stand next to the sump, depending on the type, have a look at the DNW 250 from Reef Octopus.
The problem is that if something goes wrong you have water on the floor

Now with in sump skimmers the pump is inside the sump taking water from the sump skimming it and returning it to the sump to continue its journey to the display.

Both work and have their pros and cons, but I like in sump

PS. Thanks for the help with Sketchup:thumbup:

Looking good Bruce, will you not have space for a 25 L drum next to the sump, to pour R/O from a drum into that R/O chamber while the sump is in a tank is not going to be easy

The design looks good. May I suggest, though, that you increase the size of the return-pump chamber. In a set-up such as yours, the only place where the water level will drop due to evaporation will be in the return-pump chamber. With such a small volume (guessing 6-8 litres above the pump ???), the drop in water level will be very rapid, and will cause the return pump to run dry after only a few hours if the auto top-up does not work for whatever reason. I prefer to have a "reserve capacity" of at least 48 hours before the water level reaches the return pump.

Hennie is right (as always :)) a bigger return would be great. I have a 25L drum next to the sump which i just replace when empty, the Auto top ups pipe jut gets put into the drum (mine uses a perastaltic pump) Planning on upgrading to a auto top up for the R/O drum too

You are Mr. Sketchup:thumbup:

Now this is going to be stupid question. Is the sump with skimmer,DSB and return the only filter for the system. Or is there other filtration required

A small canister or reactor for Carbon and Phosphate media

Some filter floss "pegged" on the pane between skimmer and DSB.

Possibly UV

Denitrator

Cant think of others but these are possible option, personally I would only look at the first 2 for now.

Thanks for the help with the piping Bruce, I think I have it sorted this took me less than a minute:thumbup:
