did it already smell when you removed it from the RO? When you installed it?
 
just install via the bomb method, the whole design was to remove the dependency of reactors
 
Sewerage water is a correct assumption. Certain stages of water treatment in sewerage water will generate HUGE amounts of hydrogen sulphide which is what you probably having if I see how you stored them. I would also assume that there is some ammonia with that as well, but, the biggest one would be hydrogen sulphide. When the cubes were stored in RO, you probably did not add any air in there which started a die off that caused the smell. Good news is it will return to normal, but, I would really not use it on the down pipe. Use the bomb method and the bad smell will be gone in about a day or so. Good news is that your cubes will return to normal and start working again. In future, please do not store them in RO or any other type of water. Simply remove the cubes, place on an old cloth (One that was not used for window cleaning or came into contact with any detergents) No need to place them in the sun, just in a nice dry place. Once completely dry, put them back into the jar for use at a later stage. This way you will not get any smells from hydrogen sulphide and no ammonia. And yes...the cubes will continue to work just fine after very long periods of dry storage with this method

I've been running Bio Cubes for a few days, using the bomb method. What are benefits of running it this way and the purpose of the air? Is it only to create more water flow through the cubes?

I've got it in my sump in the same chamber as and right underneath my overflow pipe for maximum water flow, just before the water leaves the chamber. Will it perform worse if I remove the airstone, keeping in mind that the chamber is about 100mm x 100mm, so most of the water coming into the sump will flow through the cubes in any case?
 
Will orca biocubes remove phosphates or will i need something like orca GFH phosphaguard ?
Sorry, just to be clear, i have nitrates and phosphates, and using the normal biocubes not the titanium..

yes they will remove them, like pellets due using RedField

what are the values of NO3 and PO4?
 
@dallasg, will let you know, because im not sure my test kits are giving correct readings.
Nitrates 10 Phosphates 4.5

I've doubled up on the amount of cubes, using 250ml now for 120l tank, Installed via the bomb method, a question on that, they air that surfaces from the airstone through the cubes kinda fizzes on the surface of the water, quite audibly, is that supposed to happen ?

yes, you can put some filter foam over it to quieten it down

phos reading seems off :p
 
It's a red sea phosphate pro test kit, not sure on age though, so taking some water to idol tomorrow to test, definitely got some phos as I have a little bit of algae.
The colours are kind of inbetween 3.06 and 5.44 on the chart on the high range test. So im not sure, that's why I want a second opinion and either must put Phospha-Guard GFH or get new test kit.
 
get a petshop to test for you, wild on pets can help you out
 
Thats some heavy phosphates... Gonna need some gfh or LaNthanum chloride to sort that out, cubes not gonna do much with that ration.. Of course, not much other than dropping your no3 and still having resudual PO4..... Cyano hello summer
