King Triton's 1000L upgrade

And agree, if the sand when you remove it, smells like rotten eggs, rather be careful and use carbon. Or get other sand.

I see... Well if it is really bad, then I will use my current DT substrate for the DSB and keep the life in that one. Will take some time to establish all the goodies from the current DSB though.

My issue is that my tank has to go and then the new tank comes in(same day). How long would I be able to keep my livestock in storage bins?(this is all the time I will have to set the new tank up) The guy im swapping with needs to put his stuff into my tank while waiting for his new tank to arrive.

but my understanding is that moving a DSB does away with the denitrification part and leaves it as only nitrification until the DSB has matured again, so effectively its starting again with regards to nitrate export

Hey guys... I think I need more clarity on miving the DSB... should I move it or not? From what i'm reading on the net, this is a highly debatable topic.

Should I try and move it in layers as Riaan explained or should I just use my current DT substrate as the new DSB and seed from my old one? The old DSB has just matured so much and I really would likee to keep the bacteria housed in it. The same goes with my DT substrate, at the moment, it has thousands of tiny worms, and stuff all over. If i rinse this before adding it as my new DSB, will it kill off everything in it?

when you come around to pick up some drums we can have a chat. will show you what I did.

From there its your own choice as what to do

Okay great.. It should be this evening.. I will give you a call a bit later Riaan

Hey guys.. just thought I would update this with a few pics of the new tank. This was done over two days so unfortunately did not really have time to take pics in between and dont think these can start a new tank thread.. scaping has not been done yet, rocks were just placed inside. I need more rock lol. The second chamber in the sump is for LR so need a lot more.

thanks to everyone who were kind enough to help. Its greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on your upgrade. Corals looks all fine. Fish looks lost in their big new world.

Tank update after 3 months

Hey Peeps.. I thought I would just update this thread with some pics of how my tank is coming along after 3 months. Have not made any hectic changes. Just built my ATO, and swapped out my return pump for a 8000L/H and split this into three at the bottom of my tank so some extra flow down low, the rest of the flow comes from two macro aqua wave makers, 10 000l/h. Have also played around with scaping. I'm quiet amazed at how it ended up with so little rock. Need to start covering the rock with more corals now.. so will start fragging my softies in the meantime.

Current stock list:

1 x Yellow Foxface
1 x yellow tang
1 x powder blue tang
1 x sailfin tang
1 x cleaner wrasse
1 x green spotted mandarin ( will be adding a mate for her soon)
2 x tomato clowns
3 x chromis
4 x cleaner shrimp
1 x blue star
1 x snowflake eel

Various softies and LPS

Please excuse the cell phone pics. Corals were not totally open here as these pics were taken this morning. Took pics under variious lighting. I first switch on my blue LEDs, then blue T5s, then white T5s, and they go off in reverse order at night.

Stunning!
Like the eel, does he not even bother your shrimp?

Nope... I have him from about the time he was 8cms. He will only eat lance fish and squid off a feeding stick. Even if a lance fish lies next to him, he will not touch it. He is trained to only eat off the stick. The fish actually give him a hard time when he eats as they want all the left over bits. The shrimp walk over him, and clean his mouth.

It creates a bit of a wow factor when people see this in person. Will try an do a video of him feeding.
