Hi guys,

So I bought myself a new tank this weekend after feeling the need to upgrade from my current TL550. It came without a sump and plumbing so I have some work before I set it up. I'm planning on using my TL550 as a sump, however if that is not a good idea let me know. The tanks specifications and equipment will be as follows:

Specifications
  • Display size: 600x600x450
  • Sump: TL550 (for now)
Equipment
  • Display lighting: Radion gen2 XR30
  • Sump lighting: 90W improved living led
  • Skimmer: Tunze 9004
  • Heater: Eheim 200W
  • Cooling: Boyu fan
  • Return pump: 1200 litre pump (for now)
  • Wavemakers: 1x1200 lph, 1x2000 lph
I've already painted the frame from white to black and will add my radion mount over the weekend and build the cabinet.

Photos of my current TL550 and the new tank can be seen below:

Congratulations on the upgrade @Japes !!

If you ended up using the tl550 as a sump at least you wouldn't be developing Multiple Tank Syndrome (MTS)... for now at least lol. However, I prefer the idea of a sump designed and dedicated to a tank. You can probably sell the Tl550 and put that money back into your build :).

If you don't mind is it possible to get a picture of the new tanks overflow box, I am in the process of designing a tank so I could do with the added inspiration :).

Yeah I agree I think I'm just going to build myself a new sump and do it right from the start. It's a skinny overflow if I'm not mistaken, will take a picture of it tonight.

Quick update:
Built myself a nice little cabinet into the frame today, I'll treat the wood tomorrow and build myself a sump as well. Planning on setting up next weekend.

This looks very neat :)

is the shelf not in the way to access the sump?

So I finally set my tank up Yesterday:m28:, I'll takes some pictures after work since the water wasn't clear yesterday. I have two problems with the setup at the moment, it has a skinny overflow and it is making lots of noise at the overflow itself, not while the water is going down the overflow piping. How can I reduce the amount of noise? Another problem I have is the amount of bubbles where the overflow feeds into the sump. If anyone has any suggestions it will be much appreciated. See the pictures for more detail. I was thinking that I should definitely add a ball valve to the return piping, but not sure what else.

Rather use a gate valve you will have lots more control with water. Than a ball valve.
If you dont control your flow the drain pipe to the sump will just suck the overflow dry and you will have lots off air going to you sump. And thats also making the noise

Makes sense, thanks. I'll get myself a gate valve and update on the difference.
