Good afternoon everyone, thank you for taking the time to read and/or answer this. My question is what is the recommended general hardness for a reef tank? I have tried diving in but it all is just in relation to Freshwater systems. They said that general hardness is tied to PH and that it isnt good for freshwater fish, but marine fish and reef tanks generally have a much higher PH than freshwater tanks. So what should be the recommended ppm? Mine is at about 250.

It said that general hardness is an important component of any reef tank, it is basically measures the amount of Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium in the water. Thus it is tied to PH and PH is a very important component of a reef tank. Plus i can never be too sure.

I have no idea....But what I can say is in the 7 or 8 years i've been fiddling with Marines i've never tested for general hardness. So i guess it's not so important.....lol

DKH is a measure of carbonate and bicarbonate in water. General hardness is a measure of all the dissolved minerals in water incl Ca, Mg, and carb/bicarb. So it's a pretty useless measure to us as we want to measure each individually.
