Best Phosphate Reactor & Media

Hey Guys,
Really been having hastles with on-going Green Hairy Algie (GHA) problems.
Think it is the Natural Sea Water I add for my water changes!
Anyway thought to kerb this a bit put a Phos Reactor (or DIY one?)
into my 1600L set up
Who reckons they have the best set up for this and best Phosphate removing media?:blush:
 
brent be careful not to fall victim to treating the symptom instead of the cause scenario.. i would make every effort to get good clean water (nsw) for waterchanges and top up with RO to curb the problem. keeping in mind that excessive feeding can aslo be a cause ..

in most cases a phos reactor is used in a "polishing" capacity to get the last little bit out or as a countermeasure where a heavily stocked system is the case..

Yip Les,
That's what I wanna do 'polish it'
I have a few strands here and there!! I know what it is from my LR but that is cured now... Just to kinda get the last bit off and keep it balanced!:)
 
Can use it in a bag or for best results in a reactor. Rowaphos is good yes,you would need the bigger tub as you have a large system.

So people you reckon Rhowaphos is the way to go, which reactor though?:blush:
 
...me too do NSW water changes at first when i started i had it every where..GHA..Bubble...Cyano...man i felt like giving up...but then i decided that i got thus far ...there is no turning back for me now...i took all the LR out went the Hydrogen Peroxide and RO way....scrub with a tooth brush...rinse off sun dried and then srub some more...my rocks are clean i had to let go of my Solaris Goby...there were no algae for him to feed on..
 
Phos Reactor has been running awesome in my tank..
I run it in conjunction with my carbon in the same reactor, any downfalls to doing this?

If you have two different types of media mixed in one reactor the one could run out before the other leading you to change out media that has not been fully utilized.

Sliver I have them running in sepperate ... sexy pantihose for each media;)

I didn't know phos and carbon media had to tumble? thought that was only your bio balls, ammonia stones, cos phos and carbon are both very fine media!!?:blush:
 
Not too sure about the carbon but I know it's best for Phos media to tumble to get the best possible contact between the water and media. I've never used Rowaphos but I know for PhosGuard it was best to have a gentle tumble/fluidized effect.

I have the sorb-4 from Nathan at The Serious Reefer. What about taking the Phos media out the pantihose and leaving the carbon in pantihose then phos can tumble and carbon stays in place???:whistling:

You want PO4 media and carbon to tumble. BUT GENTLY. Other wise it will rub and dissipate into the system.

I read an article on RC about a study that was done that linked lateral erosion with use of carbon.

Hi, here is my questions… I have a 2 reef octopus fluidizer..one already has Rowa Phos in it the other I plan to use for Rowa Carbon.

Questions

1. The RowaPhos tends to disappear after several weeks in the fluidizer… at what rate should the water be flowing 1000L/H
This is usually due to ‘over’ fluidising the media to the point it grinds itself down. When viewing the reactor from the side, the surface of the media should be ‘gently’ simmering or bubbling. This will keep abrasion to a minimum. Equally a sponge should be used at the top of the reactor before the outlet to avoid media being blown through the outlet and out of the reactor (as in our FR range of Deltec Fluidised reactors)

2. Can I put the RowaPhos and RowaCarbon in bags and then into the fluidizer? Or will this defeat the purpose of the fluidizer?
You can, but this largely defeats the purpose of fluidisation and lowers efficiency. If at all possible the medias should be fluidised loose in separate reactors. Combining both medias together can lead to abrasion due to the hardness of Rowacarbon compared to the softer Rowaphos.
