Viper. One should turn off the skimmer when dosing amino acids. I've been reading the brightwell NeoZeo guide and they recommend dosing after lights out and turning off the skimmer from 4-6hours and having the skimmer hooked up to a timer. This should be done for carbon dosing and probiotics otherwise the skimmer just sucks it up. What other guys do if you have the time and are nocturnal is just remove the skimmer cup so the skimmer still aerates the water but nothing is removed.

Mek, I am currently using the Boyd Vitachem at a dose of eight drops per day. I will switch over to the Brightwell product when it's finished

Hey viper, no, I leave the skimmer running. Some say leave it on, others put it off. I personally think but dont practice, it is better to switch it off for an hour or 2.
I usually dose at night, as this is the time that polyps are fully extended, this way corals feed best :)

Howzit Tony. I was using KZ Amino Acids, but im going to get the Brightwell range. Need to collect it from Marco, its been lying there for some time now.

Thanks guys. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have the skimmer on a timer and have it switch off from about 8pm to 6am every night while you dose? Just worried about the pumps and their impellors if they will be able to handle being switched off and on every day.

What about carbon and phosphate reactors, should they also be switched off?
 
I don't think it will cause too many problems turning the pump off once a day. Regarding growth I have recently found that in my tank which is mainly SPS's that low nutrients are the fastest way to get corals to grow. They shed excess zooxanthellae and concentrate on growing opposed to producing zooxanthellae. My xenia on the other hand has slowed down which tells me the opposite is true with softies

I don't know about carbon and phosphate reactors but I don't think they as effective as a skimmer at removing stuff from the tank
 
Yeah, It seems to be a bit of a balancing act trying to encourage growth in both SPS and soft corals in the same tank whilst also trying to limit nutrients for SPS colour.
 
I'm having the same problem although my LPS's are all OK but my xenia although they still grow have slowed down a lot
 
Yip you have to have a proper balance in order to keep both LPS and SPS.
My system is currently nutrient poor. I had this in the past aswell, my brain corals really suffered but stuff like frogspawn were fine. My nutrients are currently so low that my grazers got nothing to feed on. I have a Clown Surgeon for almost 2.5 years and all he did was graze and never took food readily, he appears to be on its way out :(
 
I use Red Sea Max reef energy A and B, very happy with the product. Had to increase my dosage by almost double as my low nutrients were affecting everything. Only thing that I can't keep happy are Acro's and my frogspawn. All other SPS, LPS and softies are great.

Dosing seachem aquavitro fuel and it works a treat, great growth from softies and SPS are showing full polyp extension, dose 5ml per day in my 1000L. The stuff has an awesome smell aswell so must be good :thumbup:

Must give that a try, I dose 40ml of the redsea max A DAY, because of my low nutrients, my normal dosage should be 10ml a day for my 365 litre tank, and the red sea stuff is expensive.
 
another advantage of the aquavitro, its very reasonably priced.
 
Saliferts Aminos Acids at present- a capful twice a week and its bringing out some nice colour.... but that might just be my imagination or some other reason- hard to tell with marines
