BEWARE!!!!!

Hi Bruce, about your lighting, do you want MH or T5's? if mh i would seriously reconsider a lidded tank, the heat build up will be very difficult to control, even with T5's there will be some heat gain, and an open top will help with this, it will also aid the gas exchange at the water surface.

Yip MH get very very hot, i ran t5's then i got me two MH and fiited them to my canopy.
My DT has glass slides, and after 2 hours with the new MH the glass slides cracked and fell in my tank.
If adding a canopy make sure that space between water and MH are far apart, water will get very hot(or in my case glass and MH).
But you can always add a chiller:p

Hi

Thanks for that, I still need to learn the difference MH T5's etc. Firstly I need to know what they are how they look like etc. I would llike to put a hood on and possibly the I would add fans to force in and extract. Advice please

Ok, Mh = metal halide = look like security floodlights, 150w,250w or 400w usually T5's are fluorescent tubes around 15mm in diameter, due to recent leaps in technology T5's can now deliver almost the same punch of Mh without the heat gain, they are available in 10,000, 14,000 and 20,000 kelvin, which is as good as Mh for our lighting requirements (personally i would go for 14,000k 20,000k gets a bit blue)

Not many tanks have sliding lids, we prefer not to use them as they tend to trap heat, reduce gaseous exchange and may also cause a bit of salt creep if they get splashed a lot, plus they do block out a little bit of light. However, having said that, some people do use them and enjoy them, but personally I wouldn't use them.

As long as you have sufficient airflow through the hood you will not have water collecting in it.

i use the glass slides to provent my hood from bending via the water evaporation.(i made my own canopy, and treated it several times)
I have no problem with the slidings, excepct for the salt creep.

IMO i will also do it without the slides(but if you add eels they tend to climb out)

yip, from DT to first chamber in sump where your skimmer is.
best place for skimmer is at the inlet of your sump(1st chamber), then 2nd chamber will be DSB or any other, don't use filter wool anywere because this acts as a nitrate factory if you cant clean it every 3 days.

How does the plumbing work on a skimmer? The water from the Display returns to the sump[gravity] where the skimmer is, then the pump on the skimmer pumps it thru the skimmer and then plumbed from the skimmer to the DSB or how?????

Depending on the type of skimmer Bruce.
  1. In sump skimmer would be in the first chamber, the skimmer has submerged pump/pumps in the first chamber which feeds the skimmer and it flows out via the outlet and over to the DSB
  2. A recirc extarnal skimmer would be plumbed into the overflowstanding either next to the sump (or inside if you like) and water would flow out into the DSB chamber.
IMO a In sump model is safer in terms of leaks etc, any leaks/overflows wil run back into the tank

but both have their pro and cons

Hi Kanga

Long time no hear. Im going to get a in sump skimmer. Should get this weekend at Dorry

Great which one will you be getting?

Indeed been a little busy:(

Hi

Day off:razz: , thought I sketch the tank again to double check. Does anyone know where I can purchase snowcrete in Pretoria area? Ive read somewhere that this product makes nice aquascaping rock. I would like to give it a try.
