Rob's tank and greenhouse

WOW Rob, awesome project - good luck with it ;)

Keen to see the end result ;)

Second Lighty on the road trip :yeahdude:

WaWaWeeWaa. Verrri Verrri Nice Rob:D.... you have my undivided attention.

If i may be so bold....the question goes begging...green house?.
What will your culture of choice be.:whistling:

Outstanding Rob, awesome project you've got going on there.

sunburst, I'm looking at coral and inverts mostly. I'm also interested in breeding fish, but they're very time consuming and difficult to do in conjunction with a 9 to 5 job.

Thanks for the encouragement, viper et al. :)

Not much to update right now. I'll post again in a week or two.

dont we all wish we could do that!!! nice bud.. keep the pics rolling, how long did it take to erect the steel? all done by hand? could have lent you one of our cranes if you were closer!! ;)

really awesome stuff there Rob.. any updates?

Not really. The tank guy has flaked out on me, taking my deposit with him. The greenhouse frame is still up, but no glass or cladding yet. I had another pair of glazing guys out this morning to have a look at the structure. They seemed to be pretty good. Hopefully they're affordable too.

My job, new house and IMACSA are taking most of my time, but I'm plodding on.

if the tank guy is in JHB then just PM me his details so me and the boys can "pay him a visit"
But anywayz chin up m8.. ;)

Looking like a monster dude - I'll be waiting to see how this turns out! I wish I had space like this but maybe when I grow up...;) Is the green house not gonna get too hot for corals or too cold at night? How do you plan on regulating the temp in the water there?

Thanks for the offer, Loki :)

chikaboo, I'm hoping to use evaporative cooling and solar heating to control the water temperature. The tank and greenhouse will be linked together by a common sump. This should give a bit over 20 000 liters, which will act as a thermal buffer.

Anyway, it's a big experiment :)

Hey crispin :) Things are pretty good with the greenhouse. All of the glazing and most of the cladding is up.

Here's the Southeast side:

I'm going to be putting in the two acrylic windows, the top of the cladding in the gables and maybe some other bits this weekend. My hands are still stiff from last weekend :)

I've been following your mindblowing project. On the one hand I'm envious... on the other, I doubt wether I'd have the cahones to do what you're doing. It's not like you can get advice from anyone who has undertaken a similar project locally. I'm waiting with anticipation to see how everthing turns out. Will you be feeding the corals? How are you adding calcium and KH?

There's one other guy I know of, James Friend, who has a coral greenhouse. His is a polytunnel, rather than a glazed one. He's just booked his ticket for IMACSA, so I'm looking forward to meeting him and comparing notes. I seem to remember Bob the Reefbuilder was also planning one. So, anyway, there are a few guys to chat with :)

All of the tubs will be plumbed together with the main tank in the house. I'll be feeding the main tank heavily, so the coral will be fed in turn. I might feed some directly. A number of the tubs contain algae/refugiums for scrubbingthe water. They'll generate a good amount of live food.

Calcium and alk supplementation will be done with calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate/bicarbonate.

Mitsubishi?!!? Shame on you, Jacques! It's a Toyota ;)

It's great, I love my Prado. I managed to fit three 3m long 680mm wide strips of Perspex in it coming back from Maizey. Couldn't do that in the Saab.

Yes, we do keep missing each other. Perhaps we should set a time? I'll PM you next week and we can meet out front, yeah?
