Jclaas' Personal Journey!

I am needing to adjust my sg to the desired sg as exampled below and therefore this is just for information purposes. I hope this helps someone somewhere down the line.

As mentioned by another hobbyist on Reef Central at showthread.php?t=809576:
" you can lower salinity by .004 every 24hrs., but only by .002 every 24 hrs. if raising."

Also see herewith a calculator for determining the amount of salt required to achieve a certain specific gravity at https://www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/DirectSaltCalculator.php. You will probably want to just to change the units to more suitable types like litres and specific gravity.

There is also a manual calculation possible which I do as follows -

Desired sg - current sg = required sg.
Required sg ÷ decimal value of desired sg.
Multiply that x amount of grams per litre salt required to achieve desired sg and Multiply that by total water volume.

Example:
1.024-1.017 = 0.007
0.007 ÷ 0.024 = 0.292
0.292 * 37.1 g salt = 10.833 KG salt needed.

That is then aproximately a 290 litres mixture required (10 833 g ÷ 37.1 g).

The salt can also be added next to the skimmer.

Thanks @PICOdilly hopefully the renowned interest in the hobby driven by the fact that a colleague is also in it now will remain and inspire more effort :).

I have a habit of making notes relating to the tank on the glass using a permanent marker which is removed with spirits at a later stage or once I have a copy of the info and that is why I will post it here.

This is me trying my hand at vodka dosing 0.1ml per 100 l for the first 3 days, by day 4 to 7 this dosage is doubled. This Saturday will be day 7 and that is when the nutrient levels will be tested to see if they have started to drop and if so I will maintain the dosage or increase it by 0.5 ml per week untill there is a drop in nutrients. Once nutrients is cose to undetectable the dosage is halfed and maintained.

I will then look at switching to a different more advisable carbon dosing manufactured specifically for aquariums once the bulk of the nutrients are gone.

I am reconsidering the current sump design in order to include filter socks and more flow through the refugium.

I will post a pic of the design soon.

Rough sketch of the design.

My mind isn't made up fully yet though.

Thanks @Dian6430 bud.

Mangroves have been added to the sump leaving me with the uncertaintyof Wether or not I should be going the whole sand, mud and rock route like with the Caribsea The Aragonite Refugium setup or to just have them floating like they are now.
I'm keen to add a Mangrove plant in my Nano. At what stage would it be best to add it. Surely I need my Tank to run a while before adding it ? What lighting would it need

It's best the tank runs for a while allowing it to accumulate a bit of nutrients which the mangroves need to grow. Ambient tank light is fine for them and if you going to add them to the sump I would look at adding the same sort of light you would add for macro algae.

The phyto is a good nutrient boost for the amphipods and copepods in the tank as they eat it which allows them to multiply faster.

I keep a bottle in the fridge and dose it every day :).

can't wait to have a carpet of multi color zoas growing in my nano
I agree with you ! I'm thinking of moving the current frags to the new addition and have that part of the rock work just zoas :).

New mushroom all settled in :).

Nitrates starting to dropping now at least.

One of the Zetlight ZT6600 fans packed up which is a 24VDC fan. I was unable to source one that was the correct size 80x80x15 mm as the commonly found one was 25 mm.

Here is the new Zetlight Fan before it was installed.

Where did you get this from @jclaas

Hi @r0ckf1re

Any good electronic or electrical store being supplied by ACDC can get the 25 mm fans. I wasn't happy with that fan as the original Zetlight fan is 15 mm thick so I just went to my LFS and got the original Zetlight fan.

But now that I think of it one can measure the gap between the fan and light to see if the 25 mm fan can actually work.

I'll do this and revert back here.

@jclaas, methinks he's enquiring about the phyto.
