High PH in RO water

Calcium Chloride WHUPS KalkWasser's ASS!!!

Hiya Alan

Lemmesee if we can explain your situation.

I have explored real-case for your reef,

with as little technicalities possible.

Near ZERO tds
pH ~ 8.5

TDS influence is non-existent, so purely ALKALINE SPECIES affect your pH.

eg) as mentioned, just a SLIGHT EXCESS Hydoxyl(OH) ion

YOUR RO product-water pH is nearly entirely dependent on the SOURCE/FEED . WON'T drift down near neutral(pH7)

You use CaCl2(unclear which hydrate/grade).

Practicality NOTE>
CaCl2 Solubility-rate UNAFFECTED, at any pH you will encounter as a hobbyist.

Although CONFUSING ,THIS isn't YOUR PROBLEM with RO/CaCl2 solutions.

IF Your system ~2000L.

KW (vinegar-boosted) 16 L raises Ca by MAX 9.8ppm, under optimal conditions.

For 10ppm Ca increase, JUST 130ml, of HIGHEST CONCENTRATION Calcium Chloride solution in 1L of top-up water
[basis of Seachem ReefComplete 160 000mg/L : 100 000mg/L Kent/ESV/]

For 10ppm Ca increase using Calcium Chloride salt, 10.5 tsp dissolved in 1L top-up water.
[basis of Seachem Reef Advantage Calcium]

Using bulk-chemicals purchased , may REQUIRE MORE and YIELD LESS than the above 2 examples. Nonetheless, they serve as an excellent template

I infer you may be "sukkeling" with the AMT of CaCl2 you feel can successfully dissolve in 1L for your Dose ?

If so, use 2L INSTEAD of 1L.

This way
~ LESS HEAT Danger
~Min volume added, max delivered ionic Calcium

No worries about unusual evaporative loss/top-up manipulations. Your present methods will suffice.

Oh ja, and Which ZEOLITE/BRAND do you use as RO prefiltration?

I ask, as they ARE ion-exchangers, and could be a source of RO product pH alteration .

Oh, and callme.

I'm back in phone range for a short while again.

Yip....and its been used for some time. No disputing its effectiveness. The question is its after effect...iveness. Are the concerns ungrounded.

I'll hand over to Obi-Wan/Liaquat

I assume these are concerns acc to publication/forum-chat?

Well, after a brief literature/internet survey, ANY CONCERNS are adequately dealt with.

Please, state YOUR concerns.

Is it about residual, or excess ionic species ?

I will use the "FORCE" and address these to the best of my knowledge, experience and references. :GEEK:

Your concerns are ungrounded IF

~You recognize ANY chemicals are dangerous if mishandled, stored, prepared incorrectly BEFORE we even use them.

~You adhere to all relevant guidelines . regarding dosage/frequency.
SPECIFICALLY in a closed, artificial, limited-volume biological system as ours are.

~You include waterchanges in order of <5% monthly MINIMUM.

Here's something else you may feel better knowing.

Some people are very concerned about the build up of chloride in a tank using it regularly, and are not in the least considering using it.

Randy Holmes-Farley
Well, there's not much I can do about that. Chloride is by far the most common ion is seawater, at more than 19,000 ppm, but chloride can build up. Craig Bingman showed in a couple of articles how much builds up over time. Unless you are adding a large amount for a long period without water changes, it does not rise too much. The articles are no longer on line]

Maybe start another thread, or call?

I'm suffering - had to visit trauma centre due to eye injury, and typing is soooo difficult now.:41::arghh:
