Help with overflow

could any one tell me if this will work, it must stop the splashing noise of water falling over the overflow and stop the "toilet flushing" sound when the over flow sucks in air...

k this is what i plan on doing

the light blue is the water hight in the tank and overflow.
the dark blue is the PVC pipe.
The red is the elbows/T piece. at the top of the T piece i will have a hole drilled for air to enter
 
Yip that will work, it's an external durso :)
 
but raise that t piece above tank water level
 
you will hear a sucking noise as the water pulls in air at the t piece depending on the size hole you make in it

as long as it is nothing hectic, just finished working/ changing my sump. took out bioballs and put in deep sand, now whating for silicone to dry and wanted to change the overflow pipe. had no space inside the overflow for and internal durso
 
but you could achieve the same effect just by adding a ball valve to current overflow pipe
 
no wont be hectic like a toilet flushing but you going to be adding extra bubbles to your sump from sucking air in the breather as the water passes so hope you have a baffel if you going dsb:D

Got a solution to that that I use.

Get a tupperware(plastic biscuit bow) and cut a hole in the lid the same size as your return pipe. Also add a 1" breather hole to the lid.

Fit it lid first just above the waterline and drill a holestraight through the return pipe to allow a plastic dowel to slide completely through holding your lid in place and to stop it dropping off.

Next take the box itself and drill heaps of 1" holes in the bottom.

Fill the box with filterfloss and install the box which will now have its rim just above the waterline

Bingo no more micro bubbles

There we go, excellent idea Geordie,that will help a lot with salt creep as well.

Just be sure to clean the floss regularly
 
If you are looking for a simple solution to noise at the overflow and bubbles and more noise where the water enters the sump from the overflow, maybe this will help. These are some pics of one of my coral holding tanks showing the overflow and plumbing. It is dead silent and absolutely no bubbles in the tank/sump below. Where I have the inverted Durso, you could just have a straight pipe as it’s only used in case of a blockage to the slots in the lower pipe. Note that the lower pipe is totally submerged an therefore no air (bubbles) can be drawn into it.

This pic shows the pipe that enters the bottom tank. Please note that although it looks like nothing is flowing out of it, it’s actually delivering about 4500l/h from the top tank. Yes it is flowing at the time I took the pic. Notice there are no bubbles at all.

The only thing with adding a ball valve is you're never sure if it will get blocked by something small enough to get into the pipe but large enough to stick in the ballvalve.

Had a near flood incident with a snail on the old trigon which got stuck this way. After that I always put eggcrate across the overflow pipe to stop this happening again.

You're drawing put's my old eggcrate idea to shame.

You've got it spot on........ Nice idea if you have the room to fit it.
 
Thanks Geordie. Yes you do not want anything such as snails to block the down flow of water. This is why I have holes or slots at the bottom of the pipe, if a snail had to block a hole or two it wouldn’t really matter as water can still flow down via the others holes/slots and if it did restrict the flow it would then fill up the box until the emergency pipe comes into play. In fact I only did the drawing with a ball valve, my actual tanks have no ball valves, as they are not needed in this design. I like your solution to the micro bubbles as well.;)
