Purigen and Phosguard both made by Seachem will be more than sufficient. Carbon is only really used for removing something specific. ie medicine

IMO I would go with Chemi-Pure Elite. This product has worked very well for me in my Nano over the last year. It's a combined carbon and phosphate removing compound which also boasts that it has Nitrate reducing properties. Not sure about how effectively it would reduce the Nitrates , but thats just my opinion.
Chemi-Pure Elite sells for approx R 300 for a 330g bag and will last 3-4 months.
Simply put the bag in your return pump compartment and that's it !
Last Note : You need to identify the source of your Nitrates & Phosphates.Otherwise you are only going to be treating the symptom and not resolving the issue.

The sleeper goby, it is the one that sifts your sand right. If it is I don't think your tank size will be able to keep it alive. They need a large open sand area to feed and a boyu just can't provide this, or so I've been told...
I have a yellow head Sleeper goby in my Boyu TL-550 and he has taken to eat with the other fish. At first he did not eat and started to look rather thin, but then I was advised to feed live brine shrimp. This got him to start eating in my tank and now he is eating pellets and frozen brine shrimp. He did get his figure back and is really growing nicely now. He still shifts through the sand and in doing that he is getting rid of some of the detritus in the sand, but that is not his main food source anymore.
Maybe I am lucky that he is eating "normal" fish food.

Thats cool. I didn't know they ate food like pellets and that. Always thought they just sifted the sand for pods...

Well if you cook your carbon and let it cool off and repeat the process this should get rid of all the nasties that is in the carbon...
works...just a bit of a shlep...I still prefer chemi pure elite due to its ease of use
Just my 2C, although they will eat pellets 7 "normal" fish food this doesnt really suit their dietary requirements. They really do need a large DSB to thrive
Hey all bit of a hijack . i got a question regarding what should be used sand wise in a tank ? as i current have a load of small stones etc with in the tank.
should this perhaps be replaces with say with somethign similar to fine sea sand perhaps ?

Darksun ...small stones will catch all the Crap in your tank (ie fish poo, uneaten food etc etc)
Dont know where you stay if you can get clean seasand (taken below low water mark) thats cool. Budget wise aragonite is awesome but expensive, otherwise normal reggies playsand (just wash it about 1 zillion times)
Dont change all at once, do it a few cups at a time to give the system time to adjust
